Abstract

A staple cartridge comprising a cartridge body, staples removably stored in the cartridge body, and a sled configured to drive the staples out of the cartridge body is disclosed. In use, the staple cartridge is seatable in a jaw of a stapling instrument which is positioned opposite a movable jaw. The surgical instrument further comprises a closure lockout which prevents the movable jaw from being closed if the staple cartridge is not seated in the stapling instrument. The surgical instrument also comprises a firing lockout which prevents the stapling instrument from being fired if the sled is not in a proximal unfired position when the staple firing stroke is initiated.

Claims (56)

1. A stapling system, comprising:

a stapling instrument, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw between an unclamped position and a clamped position; and

a staple cartridge seatable in said first jaw, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and

a sled movable distally from an unfired position to a fired position by said firing member to eject said staples from said cartridge body during said staple firing stroke;

a clamp lockout configured to block said second jaw from moving into said clamped position unless said staple cartridge is seated in said first jaw; and

a firing lockout configured to block said firing member from being moved distally through said staple firing stroke, wherein said firing lockout is deactivated by said staple cartridge when said staple cartridge is seated in said first jaw and said sled is in said unfired position.

2. The stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said clamp lockout and said firing lockout are rotatably mounted to said first jaw.

3. The stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said firing system comprises a firing motor, and wherein said stapling system further comprises:

a closure system configured to move said second jaw into said clamped position, wherein said closure system comprises a closure motor;

a controller configured to control the operation of said firing motor and said closure motor; and

a sensor configured to electronically detect the presence of said staple cartridge in said first jaw, wherein said sensor is in communication with said controller, and wherein said controller is configured to prevent the operation of said firing motor and said closure motor if said sensor detects that said staple cartridge is not seated in said first jaw.

4. The stapling system of claim 3 , further comprising a spring configured to bias said clamp lockout and said firing lockout into locked positions.

5. The stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said firing lockout resets to re-lock said firing member when said firing member is retracted after said staple firing stroke.

6. The stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said cartridge body contacts said clamp lockout to deactivate said clamp lockout.

7. The stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said staple cartridge further comprises an RFID tag and said stapling instrument comprises an RFID reader configured to read said RFID tag, wherein said stapling instrument further comprises a controller in communication with said RFID reader, wherein said firing system further comprises an electric motor configured to drive said firing member, and wherein said controller is configured to control the electrical power supplied to said electric motor.

8. The stapling system of claim 7 , wherein said RFID tag comprises at least one datum that is used by said controller to identify said staple cartridge, and wherein said controller is configured to limit the electrical power supplied to said electric motor based on the identification of said staple cartridge.

9. The stapling system of claim 7 , wherein said RFID tag comprises at least one datum that is used by said controller to authenticate said staple cartridge, and wherein said controller is configured to limit the electrical power supplied to said electric motor based on the authentication of said staple cartridge.

10. The stapling system of claim 7 , wherein said RFID tag comprises at least one datum that can used by said controller to identify said staple cartridge, wherein said at least one datum includes a serial number of said staple cartridge, and wherein said controller is configured to prevent electrical power from being supplied to said electric motor if said serial number cannot be identified.

11. The stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising a control system configured to read and identify a serial number of said staple cartridge, and wherein a controller is configured to limit the operation of said stapling system if said serial number cannot be identified.

12. A stapling system, comprising:

a stapling instrument, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw between an unclamped position and a clamped position; and

a firing system comprising a firing member movable distally during a staple firing stroke;

a staple cartridge seatable in said first jaw, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and

a sled movable distally from an unfired position to a fired position by said firing member to eject said staples from said cartridge body during said staple firing stroke;

a clamp lockout movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein said clamp lockout is configured to block said second jaw from moving into said clamped position when said clamp lockout is in said locked position, and wherein said clamp lockout is moved into said unlocked position when said staple cartridge is seated in said first jaw; and

a firing lockout movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein said firing lockout is configured to block said firing member from being moved distally through said staple firing stroke when said firing lockout is in said locked position, and wherein said firing lockout is moved into its unlocked position when said staple cartridge is seated in said first jaw and said sled is in said unfired position.

13. The stapling system of claim 12 , wherein said clamp lockout and said firing lockout are rotatably mounted to said first jaw.

14. The stapling system of claim 12 , further comprising a spring positioned intermediate said clamp lockout and said firing lockout.

15. The stapling system of claim 14 , wherein said spring is configured to bias said clamp lockout and said firing lockout into their locked positions.

16. The stapling system of claim 12 , wherein said firing lockout resets to re-lock said firing member when said firing member is retracted after said staple firing stroke.

17. The stapling system of claim 12 , wherein said cartridge body contacts said clamp lockout to deactivate said clamp lockout.

18. The stapling system of claim 12 , wherein said staple cartridge further comprises an RFID tag and said stapling instrument comprises an RFID reader configured to read said RFID tag, wherein said stapling instrument further comprises a controller in communication with said RFID reader, wherein said firing system further comprises an electric motor configured to drive said firing member, and wherein said controller is configured to control the electrical power supplied to said electric motor.

19. The stapling system of claim 18 , wherein said RFID tag comprises at least one datum that is used by said controller to identify said staple cartridge, and wherein said controller is configured to limit the electrical power supplied to said electric motor based on the identification of said staple cartridge.
