Abstract

The disclosed embodiments relate to systems and methods for a surgical tool or a surgical robotic system. A coupling device driven by a plurality of drive disks corresponds to a first motor and a second motor. One or more processors are configured to send a low torque command to a first motor, send the low torque command to a second motor, determine whether the first motor and the second motor meet one or more hold engagement criteria, send a high torque command to the first motor in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more hold engagement criteria, and send the high torque command to the second motor in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more hold engagement criteria.

Claims (52)

1. A surgical robotic system, comprising:

a coupling device for a surgical tool, the coupling device driven by a plurality of drive disks corresponding to a first motor and a second motor; and

one or more processors configured to:

send a low torque command to a first motor;

send the low torque command to a second motor;

determine whether the first motor and the second motor meet one or more hold engagement criteria;

send a high torque command to the first motor in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more hold engagement criteria; and

send the high torque command to the second motor in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more hold engagement criteria.

2. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the coupling device is a yoke mechanism for a closure joint of the surgical tool.

3. The surgical robotic system of claim 2 , wherein the coupling device provides a hardstop to inhibit relative motion between the plurality of drive disks corresponding to the first motor and the second motor.

4. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , the one or more processors configured to:

determine whether the first motor and the second motor meet one or more homing criteria; and

report a successful closure joint engagement in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more homing criteria.

5. The surgical robotic system of claim 4 , wherein the one or more homing criteria includes a torque condition, the torque condition including a difference between a first torque for the first motor and a second torque for the second motor.

6. The surgical robotic system of claim 4 , wherein the one or more homing criteria includes a velocity condition, wherein the velocity condition is a range including zero velocity.

7. The surgical robotic system of claim 4 , the one or more processors configured to:

determine, after the high torque command is sent, whether the first motor or the second motor violates the one or more homing criteria; and

reset a counter for successful closure joint engagement in response to the first motor or the second motor violating the one or more homing criteria.

8. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the low torque command is selected to overcome a frictional force associated with the plurality of drive disks.

9. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hold engagement criteria includes a velocity of one of the plurality of drive disks and a torque for one of the plurality of drive disks.

10. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , the one or more processors configured to:

send a wait command to the first motor when the first motor has met the one or more hold engagement criteria and before the second motor has met the one or more hold engagement criteria.

11. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a hardstop switch actuatable in response to a hardstop associated with the first motor and the second motor, wherein the hardstop switch provides a signal to interrupt the first motor and the second motor.

12. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , the one or more processors configured to:

start a counter for closure joint engagement;

compare the counter to a homing time limit; and

generate a failure message when the counter exceeds the homing time limit before the closure joint engagement.

13. The surgical robotic system of claim 12 , wherein the failure message includes instructions to detach an instrument from the robotic system.

14. A method for operation of a first motor and a second motor for a closure joint of a surgical tool, the method comprising:

sending a low torque command to the first motor coupled to the closure joint of the surgical tool;

sending the low torque command to the second motor coupled to the closure joint of the surgical tool;

determining whether the first motor and the second motor meet one or more hold engagement criteria;

sending a high torque command to the first motor in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more hold engagement criteria; and

sending the high torque command to the second motor in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more hold engagement criteria.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

determining whether the first motor and the second motor meet one or more homing criteria; and

reporting a successful closure joint engagement in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more homing criteria, wherein the one or more homing criteria includes a torque condition or a velocity condition.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

starting a counter for closure joint engagement;

comparing the counter to a homing time limit; and

generating a failure message when the counter exceeds the homing time limit before the closure joint engagement.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the failure message includes instructions to detach an instrument.

18. A tool driver for a surgical tool, the tool driver comprising:

a plurality of drive disks corresponding to a first motor and a second motor;

a coupling device for a surgical tool, the coupling device driven by the plurality of drive disks corresponding to the first motor and the second motor; and

a controller configured to generate a plurality of commands for operation of the first motor and the second motor, the plurality of commands including:

a first low torque command for the first motor;

a second low torque command for the second motor;

a first high torque command to the first motor generated in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting one or more hold engagement criteria; and

a second high torque command to the second motor generated in response to the first motor and the second motor meeting the one or more hold engagement criteria.

19. The tool driver of claim 18 , wherein the coupling device comprises a yoke mechanism for a closure joint of the surgical tool.
