Abstract

A hypercapacitor energy storage system or device facilitates fast charging, stable energy retention, high energy to weight storage and the like. The hypercapacitor comprises an ultracapacitor in electrical connection with an energy retainer which may comprise a battery, a battery field, a standard capacitor and/or the like. The electrical connection between the ultracapacitor and energy retainer may stabilize the energy retention of the hypercapacitor and provide for long-term energy storage and prevent self-discharge. The hypercapacitor may be electrically couplable to an energy source such as the utility grid via a low voltage outlet (e.g., 110V or 220V) or other charging system and may undergo fast charging. The hypercapacitor may be electrically couplable to and/or integrated with various systems or devices requiring energy storage and/or usage and may provide energy thereto.

Claims (48)

1 . An energy storage apparatus for powering a power device with a plurality of energy sources, the apparatus comprising:

a capacitor disposed within a hypercapacitor housing;

a first battery disposed within the hypercapacitor housing, the capacitor and the first battery comprising a single integrated unit within the hypercapacitor housing, the hypercapacitor housing configured to fit at least partially within an interior region of a handle of a power device, the hypercapacitor housing configured to removably integrate with the power device to supply energy to the power device, and the power device comprising a handheld power device; and

one or more input diodes configured to electrically couple with a plurality of energy sources comprising a power generation system of the handheld power device and a utility grid external to the handheld power device, wherein the one or more input diodes are configured to removably electrically couple to the utility grid via a standard 110 volt or 220 volt outlet, wherein the one or more input diodes are biased toward the capacitor and away from the plurality of energy sources, wherein the one or more input diodes are configured to electrically couple the capacitor with the plurality of energy sources;

wherein the capacitor is configured to:

electrically couple to the power generation system of the handheld power device via the one or more input diodes, the power generation system configured to generate energy from a mechanical movement of the handheld power device;

receive a first inbound energy from the power generation system of the handheld power device via the one or more input diodes;

removably electrically couple to the utility grid external to the handheld power device via the standard 110 volt or 220 volt outlet and the one or more input diodes;

receive a second inbound energy from the utility grid via the one or more input diodes;

store the first inbound energy and the second inbound energy as a first energy in an electric field of the capacitor; and

convey the first energy, as an outbound energy, to the first battery, wherein said first battery is directly electrically coupled to the capacitor via one or more output diodes biased toward the first battery without any other active device between the capacitor and the first battery, wherein the one or more output diodes is configured to prevent a flow of energy from the first battery to the capacitor; and

wherein said first battery is configured to:

receive the outbound energy from the capacitor based on at least a resistance in the one or more output diodes, wherein the resistance is based on at least a voltage level of the first battery and a voltage level of the capacitor;

receive the outbound energy from the capacitor when the voltage level of the first battery drops below a low threshold;

resist receiving the outbound energy from the capacitor when the voltage level of the first battery exceeds a high threshold; and

store said outbound energy as a second energy of the first battery, wherein the capacitor is configured to resist receiving the second energy from the first battery.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a second battery, wherein the capacitor is further configured to:

convey the first energy, as the outbound energy, to the second battery, wherein said second battery is electrically coupled to the capacitor and configured to:

receive the outbound energy from the capacitor; and

store the outbound energy as a third energy of the second battery.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first battery and second battery comprise a battery field.

9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first battery comprises lithium.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor is a supercapacitor.

11 . A method for powering a power device, the method comprising:

removably integrating a hypercapacitor housing at least partially within an interior region of a handle of a power device to provide energy to the power device, the power device comprising a handheld power device, the hypercapacitor housing comprising a size and a shape to fit within the interior region of the handle of the handheld power device, the hypercapacitor housing comprising a capacitor and a first battery integrated as a single unit within the hypercapacitor housing;

electrically coupling one or more input diodes with a plurality of energy sources comprising a power generation system of the handheld power device and a utility grid external to the handheld power device;

electrically coupling the capacitor via the one or more input diodes to the power generation system of the handheld power device;

generating first inbound energy from mechanical movement of the handheld power device with the power generation system;

receiving the first inbound energy at the capacitor from the power generation system via the one or more diodes;

removably electrically coupling the capacitor via the one or more diodes to the utility grid external to the handheld power device via a standard 110 volt or 220 volt outlet;

receiving a second inbound energy at the capacitor from the utility grid via the one or more diodes;

storing the first inbound energy and the second inbound energy as a first energy in an electric field of the capacitor;

conveying, as an outbound energy, the first energy from the capacitor to the first battery, wherein said first battery is directly electrically coupled to the capacitor via one or more output diodes without any other active device between the capacitor and the first battery;
