Abstract

In one general aspect, various embodiments of the present invention can include a motorized surgical cutting and fastening instrument having a drive shaft, a motor selectively engageable with the drive shaft, and a manual return mechanism configured to operably disengage the motor from the drive shaft and retract the drive shaft. In at least one embodiment, a surgeon, or other operator of the surgical instrument, can utilize the manual return mechanism to retract the drive shaft after it has been advanced, especially when the motor, or a power source supplying the motor, has failed or is otherwise unable to provide a force sufficient to retract the drive shaft.

Claims (40)

1. A surgical system, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw between an open position and a closed position;

a replaceable fastener cartridge comprising a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein; and

a firing member movable between a starting position and an ending position;

a rotary drive shaft operably coupled to said firing member, wherein said firing member is linearly advanceable in a distal direction toward said ending position based on rotation of said rotary drive shaft in a first direction, and wherein said firing member is linearly retractable in a proximal direction toward said starting position based on rotation of said rotary drive shaft in a second direction;

an electric motor operably coupleable with said rotary drive shaft, wherein said electric motor is configured to rotate said rotary drive shaft in said first direction and said second direction;

a power supply configured to supply power to said electric motor; and

a manually actuatable bailout system configured to apply rotary motions to said rotary drive shaft in said second direction.

2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam that engages said first jaw and a second cam that engages said second jaw when said firing member is advanced in said distal direction to fire said fasteners.

3. The surgical system of claim 2 , further comprising a lockout that prevents said firing member from being moved in said distal direction to fire said fasteners when said replaceable fastener cartridge is missing from said end effector.

The surgical system of claim 3 , further comprising an elongate shaft, wherein said end effector is articulatable relative to said elongate shaft about an articulation joint, wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal shaft axis, and wherein said manually actuatable bailout system comprises a rotatable actuator that is rotatable about a longitudinal drive axis.

5. A surgical fastening apparatus, comprising:

an elongate shaft;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw between an open position and a closed position; and

a replaceable fastener cartridge comprising a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein; and

a firing member movable between a starting position and an ending position within said end effector;

a rotary drive shaft operably interfacing with said firing member such that rotation of said rotary drive shaft in a first rotary output direction causes said firing member to linearly advance in a distal direction within said end effector and rotation of said rotary drive shaft in a second rotary output direction causes said firing member to linearly retract in a proximal direction within said end effector;

a motor-driven drive system comprising a rotary input driveable in a first rotary input direction to cause said rotary drive shaft to rotate in said first rotary output direction and driveable in a second rotary input direction to cause said rotary drive shaft to rotate in said second rotary output direction; and

a manually actuatable bailout system that applies rotary motions to said rotary drive shaft in said second rotary output direction when said manually actuatable bailout system is actuated.

6. The surgical fastening apparatus of claim 5 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam that engages said first jaw and a second cam that engages said second jaw when said firing member is advanced in said distal direction to fire said fasteners.

7. The surgical fastening apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising a lockout that prevents said firing member from being moved in said distal direction to fire said fasteners when said replaceable fastener cartridge is missing from said end effector.

8. The surgical fastening apparatus of claim 7 , wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal shaft axis, and wherein said manually actuatable bailout system comprises a rotatable actuator that is rotatable about a longitudinal drive axis.

9. A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising:

an elongate shaft;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw between an unclamped position and a clamped position;

a replaceable staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and

a firing member movable between a starting position and an ending position within said end effector:

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said elongate shaft;

a rotary drive shaft operably interfacing with said firing member such that rotation of said rotary drive shaft in a first rotary output direction causes said firing member to longitudinally advance in a distal direction within said end effector and rotation of said rotary drive shaft in a second rotary output direction causes said firing member to longitudinally retract in a proximal direction within said end effector;

a motor-driven drive system comprising a rotary input driveable, in a first rotary input direction to cause said rotary drive shaft to rotate in said first rotary output direction and driveable in a second rotary input direction to cause said rotary drive shaft to rotate in said second rotary output direction; and

a manually-actuatable bailout system that applies rotary motions to said rotary drive shaft in said second rotary output direction when said manually-actuatable bailout system is actuated.

10. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam that engages said first jaw and a second cam that engages said second jaw when said firing member is advanced in said distal direction to fire said staples.

11. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a lockout that prevents said firing member from being moved in said distal direction to fire said staples when said replaceable staple cartridge is missing from said end effector.

12. The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 11 , wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal shaft axis, and wherein said manually-actuatable bailout system comprises a rotatable actuator that is rotatable about a longitudinal drive axis.
