Abstract

An automated measurement device and method for coronary artery disease scoring is disclosed. An example device includes a processor configured to obtain a computerized model of a plurality of vascular segments of a patient and create an unstenosed computerized model from the computerized model by virtually enlarging at least some locations of the vascular segments of the computerized model. The processor also determines vascular state scoring tool (“VSST”) scores based on characteristics of vascular locations along the vascular segments. The processor further determines a severity of stenosis for the vascular locations based on comparisons of first blood flow parameter values at the vascular locations in the computerized model to corresponding second blood flow parameter values at the same vascular locations in the unstenosed computerized model. A user interface of the device displays the severity of stenosis in conjunction with the VSST scores for the vascular locations.

Claims (35)

1. An apparatus for coronary artery disease scoring, the apparatus comprising: a processor; and

a memory storing non-transitory computer-readable instructions, which when executed, cause the processor to:

access a computerized model representative of vascular segments of a patient, wherein the computerized model comprises one or more stenosed vascular segments and a plurality of normal vascular segments and,

generate an unstenosed computerized model based on virtually enlarging the plurality of stenosed vascular segments of the computerized model based on widths of the plurality of normal vascular segments,

determine, based on the computerized model and the unstenosed computerized model, metrics associated with one or more vascular locations along the enlarged plurality of stenosed vascular segments, wherein the metrics include (1) a number of branching points, (2) geometry information associated with individual aspects of the vascular locations, and (3) tortuosity of the vascular locations,

determine, based on blood flow parameters of the computerized model and the unstenosed computerized model, a severity for at least one of the one or more stenosed vascular segments, and cause a user interface to display the severity of the at least one stenosed vascular segment and stenosis information, wherein the stenosis information is based on conversion of the metrics to one or more vascular state scores.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more vascular locations correspond to lesions.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the vascular state scores address vascular state questions including one or more of occlusive degree, vessel diameter of lesions, and presence of a total occlusion.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the vascular state scores include a parameter describing presence of shunting around a total occlusion, and wherein the parameter is determined based on the metric describing the geometry information.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the vascular state scores are binary values that answer vascular state scoring questions.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a first vascular state score indicates a size of a lesion and a second vascular state score indicates a distance of the lesion from a branch point, and wherein a total vascular state score is calculated based on a combination of the first vascular state score and the second vascular state score.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein a severity of stenosis is displayed via the user interface in conjunctive with the total vascular state score.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the unstenosed computerized model is generated according to a weighting function, wherein vascular segments of the unstenosed computerized model with widths below vascular segment widths of the unstenosed computerized model are weighted more heavily than vascular segments of the unstenosed computerized model with widths above the vascular segment widths of the unstenosed computerized model.

9. A method implemented by a system of one or more processors, the method comprising:

accessing a computerized model representative of vascular segments of a patient, wherein the computerized model comprises one or more stenosed vascular segments and a plurality of normal vascular segments,

generating an unstenosed computerized model based on virtually enlarging the plurality of stenosed vascular segments of the computerized model based on widths of the plurality of normal vascular segments,

determining, based on the computerized model and the unstenosed computerized model, metrics associated with one or more vascular locations along the enlarged plurality of stenosed vascular segments, wherein the metrics include (1) a number of branching points, (2) geometry information associated with individual aspects of the vascular locations, and (3) tortuosity of the vascular locations,

determining, based on blood flow parameters of the computerized model and the unstenosed computerized model, a severity for at least one of the one or more stenosed vascular segments, and

causing a user interface to display the severity of the at least one stenosed vascular segment and stenosis information, wherein the stenosis information is based on conversion of the metrics to one or more vascular state scores.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more vascular locations correspond to lesions.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the vascular state scores address vascular state questions including one or more of occlusive degree, vessel diameter of lesions, and presence of a total occlusion.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the vascular state scores include a parameter describing presence of shunting around a total occlusion, and wherein the parameter is determined based on the metric describing the geometry information.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the vascular state scores are binary values that answer vascular state scoring questions.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein a first vascular state score indicates a size of a lesion and a second vascular state score indicates a distance of the lesion from a branch point, and wherein a total vascular state score is calculated based on a combination of the first vascular state score and the second vascular state score.

15. Method of claim 14 , wherein a severity of stenosis is displayed via the user interface in conjunctive with the total vascular state score.

16. Non-transitory computer storage media storing instructions that when executed by a system of one or more processors cause the one or more processors to:

access a computerized model representative of vascular segments of a patient, wherein the computerized model comprises one or more stenosed vascular segments and a plurality of normal vascular segments and,

generate an unstenosed computerized model based on virtually enlarging the enlarged plurality of stenosed vascular segments of the computerized model based on widths of the plurality of normal vascular segments,

determine, based on the computerized model and the unstenosed computerized model, metrics associated with one or more vascular locations along the vascular segments, wherein the metrics include (1) a number of branching points, (2) geometry information associated with individual aspects of the vascular locations, and (3) tortuosity of the vascular locations,

determine, based on blood flow parameters of the computerized model and the unstenosed computerized model, a severity for at least one of the one or more stenosed vascular segments, and cause a user interface to display the severity of the at least one stenosed vascular segments and stenosis information, wherein the stenosis information is based on conversion of the metrics to one or more vascular state scores.

17. The computer storage media of claim 16 , wherein the one or more vascular locations correspond to lesions.

18. The computer storage media of claim 16 , wherein the vascular state scores address vascular state questions including one or more of occlusive degree, vessel diameter of lesions, and presence of a total occlusion.
