Abstract

A method for energy management robotic device includes providing a base station for mating with the robotic device, determining a quantity of energy stored in an energy storage unit of the robotic device, and performing a predetermined task based at least in part on the quantity of energy stored. Also disclosed are systems for emitting avoidance signals to prevent inadvertent contact between the robot and the base station, and systems for emitting homing signals to allow the robotic device to accurately dock with the base station.

2. The cleaning robot of claim 1 , wherein the navigational control system is configured to generate data for representing a map of the room with respect to an object in the room as a point of reference.

3. The cleaning robot of claim 2 , wherein the object comprises the base station.

4. The cleaning robot of claim 2 , wherein the object comprises a wall of the room.

5. The cleaning robot of claim 1 , wherein configurations of the cleaning robot to control charging the energy storage unit comprise configurations to control charging such that the energy storage unit is only partially charged before leaving the base station to continue cleaning the room.

6. The cleaning robot of claim 1 , wherein configurations of the cleaning robot to control charging the energy storage unit comprise configurations to control charging such that the energy storage unit is fully charged before leaving the base station to continue cleaning the room.

7. The cleaning robot of claim 1 , wherein configurations of the cleaning robot to control charging the energy storage unit comprise configurations to control charging such that the energy storage unit is only partially charged as a function of a portion of the room remaining to be cleaned before leaving the base station to continue cleaning the room.

8. The cleaning robot of claim 1 , wherein configurations of the cleaning robot to control charging the energy storage unit comprise configurations to control charging such that the energy storage unit is partially charged as a function of a first portion of the room remaining to be cleaned before leaving the base station to continue cleaning the room.

9. The cleaning robot of claim 8 , wherein the cleaning robot is further configured to control charging such that the energy storage unit is fully charged as a function of a second portion of the room remaining to be cleaned before continuing cleaning the room, the second portion of the room being larger than the first portion of the room.

10. The cleaning robot of claim 1 , wherein configurations of the navigational control system to determine the amount of the room remaining to be cleaned comprise configurations to determine the amount of the room remaining to be cleaned based on a coded signal received from the base station.

11. The cleaning robot of claim 1 , wherein:

configurations of the navigational control system to direct the cleaning robot about the room and to determine the amount of the room remaining to be cleaned comprise configurations of the navigational control system to direct the cleaning robot about the room and to determine the amount of the room remaining to be cleaned during a cleaning task, and

the cleaning robot is configured to:

cease the cleaning task before controlling charging the energy storage unit, and

resume the cleaning task after controlling charging the energy storage unit.

12. An autonomous cleaning robot comprising:

an undercarriage;

a motive system configured to propel the undercarriage through a room;

an energy storage unit supported by the undercarriage and configured to be charged while the cleaning robot is positioned at a base station; and

a navigational control system configured to:

control the motive system to direct the cleaning robot about the room;

return the cleaning robot to the base station before completing a cleaning task in the room in response to detecting a need to charge the energy storage unit;

dock the cleaning robot to the base station upon return;

control charging the energy storage unit with the cleaning robot docked such that the energy storage unit is charged to an amount that is a function of an amount of the room remaining to be cleaned; and then

control the motive system to direct the cleaning robot to continue to clean the room.

13. The cleaning robot of claim 12 , wherein the navigational control system is configured to generate data for representing a map of the room with respect to an object in the room as a point of reference.

14. The cleaning robot of claim 13 , wherein the object comprises a base station.

15. The cleaning robot of claim 13 , wherein the object comprises a wall.

16. The cleaning robot of claim 12 , wherein the navigational control system is configured to determine the amount of the room remaining to be cleaned based on a coded signal received from the base station.

17. The cleaning robot of claim 12 , wherein the navigational control system is configured to determine the amount of the room remaining to be cleaned based on a cleaning route of the cleaning robot.

18. The cleaning robot of claim 12 , wherein configurations of the navigational control system to control the motive system to direct the cleaning robot to continue to clean the room comprise configurations to, following controlling charging the energy storage unit, control the motive system to direct the cleaning robot to an uncleaned portion of the room.
