Abstract

Universal switch modules, universal switches, and methods of using the same are disclosed, including haptic confirmation of commands generated by the user, methods of preparing an individual to interface with an electronic device or software.

Claims (23)

1. A method for interfacing an individual having a brain computer interface configured to control an electronic device, the method comprising:

measuring neural-related signals of the individual using a neural implant to obtain a first sensed neural signal when the individual generates a first thought;

transmitting the first sensed neural signal to a processing unit, where the processing unit associates the first sensed neural signal with a first input command independently of the electronic device; and

wherein after the processing unit associates the first sensed neural signal with the first input command, the processing unit transmits the first input command to the electronic device to cause the electronic device to issue an output command previously associated with the first input command, where the output command causes the electronic device to take an action;

wherein upon the processing unit begins to associate the first sensed neural signal with the first input command, generating a haptic feedback confirmation signal to an implanted component implanted within the individual such that the implanted component provides a physical sensation, comprising a vibration, within the individual allowing the individual to confirm selection of the first input command.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implanted component comprises a telemetry unit electrically coupled to the neural implant.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implanted component comprises an electrode configured to stimulate a nerve of the individual.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the nerve comprises a peripheral nerve.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing an observable feedback signal with the haptic feedback confirmation signal.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the observable feedback signal comprises an auditory or a visual signal on a user interface.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical sensation comprises a repeating physical sensation.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the physical sensation increases in intensity over time.

9. A method for interfacing an individual having a brain computer interface configured to control an electronic device, the method comprising:

measuring neural-related signals of the individual using a neural implant to obtain a first sensed neural signal when the individual generates a first thought;

transmitting the first sensed neural signal to a processing unit, wherein when the processing unit begins to associate the first sensed neural signal with a first input command, generating a haptic feedback confirmation signal to an implanted component implanted within the individual such that the implanted component provides a physical sensation, comprising a vibration, within the individual allowing the individual to confirm selection of the first input command;

wherein after the processing unit associates the first sensed neural signal with the first input command, the processing unit transmits the first input command to the electronic device to cause the electronic device to issue an output command associated with the first input command, where the output command causes the electronic device to take an action.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the implanted component comprises a telemetry unit electrically coupled to the neural implant.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the implanted component comprises an electrode configured to stimulate a nerve of the individual.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the nerve comprises a peripheral nerve.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising providing an observable feedback signal with the haptic feedback confirmation signal.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the observable feedback signal comprises an auditory or a visual signal on a user interface.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the physical sensation comprises a repeating physical sensation.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the physical sensation increases in intensity over time.
