Abstract

A control system for controlling extraction of landfill gas from a landfill via a gas extraction system comprising well piping, the landfill gas having a first temperature when extracted, the control system comprising: a gas composition chamber coupled to the well piping and comprising at least one sensor configured to measure one or more characteristics of a landfill gas sample in the gas composition chamber; a temperature control mechanism configured to heat the landfill gas sample in the gas composition chamber to a second temperature at least a threshold amount greater than the first temperature; and a controller configured to control the at least one sensor to measure the one or more characteristics of the landfill gas sample in the gas composition chamber when a temperature of the landfill gas sample in the gas composition chamber is at least the threshold amount greater than the first temperature.

Claims (45)

1. A control system comprising:

a chamber;

a temperature sensor, disposed in the chamber, for measuring temperature of a sample of landfill gas extracted from a landfill;

a gas characteristic sensor, disposed in the chamber and different from the temperature sensor, for measuring a gas composition of the sample of landfill gas; and

at least one controller configured to perform a method for reducing deterioration of the gas characteristic sensor, the method comprising:

while the sample of landfill gas is in the chamber:

obtaining, from the temperature sensor, a measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas;

responsive to determining, using the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas, that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is greater than or equal to a target temperature, operating the gas characteristic sensor to take at least one new measurement of the gas composition of the sample of landfill gas; and

responsive to determining, using the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas, that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is not greater than or equal to the target temperature, adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas in the chamber.

2. The control system of claim 1 , wherein, when it is determined that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is not greater than or equal to the target temperature, adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises increasing the temperature of the sample of landfill gas by heating the sample of landfill gas.

3. The control system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one controller is further configured to:

subsequent to adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas, obtain a second measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas while the sample of landfill gas is in the chamber; and

determine whether the second measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is greater than or equal to the target temperature.

4. The control system of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas using a heating element.

5. The control system of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas using a resistive surface configured to generate heat as a result of electric current flowing through the resistive surface.

6. The control system of claim 1 , wherein the gas characteristic sensor comprises an infrared sensor.

7. The control system of claim 1 , wherein the gas characteristic sensor comprises an electrochemical sensor.

8. The control system of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises controlling the temperature sensor to obtain the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas.

9. The control system of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises receiving the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas from at least one second controller configured to control the temperature sensor to obtain the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas.

10. A method for reducing deterioration of a gas characteristic sensor, the method comprising:

performing, with at least one controller:

while a sample of landfill gas extracted from a landfill is in a chamber:

obtaining, from a temperature sensor disposed in the chamber, a measurement of a temperature of the sample of landfill gas;

responsive to determining, using the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas, that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is greater than or equal to a target temperature, operating a gas characteristic sensor to take at least one new measurement of gas composition of the sample of landfill gas; and

when it is determined that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is not greater than or equal to the target temperature, adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein, when it is determined that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is not greater than or equal to the target temperature, adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises increasing the temperature of the sample of landfill gas by heating the sample of landfill gas.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

subsequent to adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas, obtaining a second measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas while the sample of landfill gas is in the chamber; and

determining whether the second measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is greater than or equal to the target temperature.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas using a heating element.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas using a resistive surface configured to generate heat as a result of electric current flowing through the resistive surface.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the gas characteristic sensor comprises an infrared sensor.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the gas characteristic sensor comprises an electrochemical sensor.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein obtaining the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises controlling the temperature sensor to obtain the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein obtaining the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises receiving the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas from at least one second controller configured to control the temperature sensor to obtain the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas.

19. A control system comprising:

a chamber;

a temperature sensor, disposed in the chamber, for measuring temperature of a sample of landfill gas extracted from a landfill;

one or more sensors, disposed in the chamber, for measuring at least one other characteristic of the sample of landfill gas different from the temperature of the sample of landfill gas; and

at least one controller configured to perform a method for reducing deterioration of the one or more sensors, the method comprising:

while the sample of landfill gas is in the chamber:

obtaining, from the temperature sensor, a measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas;

responsive to determining, using the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas, that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is greater than or equal to a target temperature, operating the one or more sensors to take at least one new measurement of the at least one other characteristic of the sample of landfill gas; and

responsive to determining, using the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas, that the temperature of the sample of landfill gas is not greater than or equal to the target temperature, adjusting the temperature of the sample of landfill gas in the chamber.

20. The control system of claim 19 , wherein obtaining the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas comprises controlling the temperature sensor to obtain the measurement of the temperature of the sample of landfill gas.
