Abstract

An exemplary tissue detection and location identification apparatus can include, for example, a first electrically conductive layer at least partially (e.g., circumferentially) surrounding a lumen, an insulating layer at least partially (e.g., circumferentially) surrounding the first electrically conductive layer, and a second electrically conductive layer circumferentially surrounding the insulating layer, where the insulating layer can electrically isolate the first electrically conductive layer from the second electrically conductive layer. A further insulating layer can be included which can at least partially surrounding the second electrically conductive layer. The first electrically conductive layer, the insulating layer, and the second electrically conductive layer can form a structure which has a first side and a second side disposed opposite to the first side with respect to the lumen, where the first side can be longer than the second side thereby forming a sharp pointed end via the first side at a distal-most portion. The exemplary configuration can be used for (a) determination/detection of a tissue type using impendence of the electrically conductive layers, and/or (ii) determination of a location of at least one portion of the insertion device/apparatus. Another exemplary apparatus can include, for example, a base structure comprising a lumen extending along a length thereof, and at least one optically-transmissive layer circumferentially surrounding the base structure and provided at least at a distal end of the base structure. For example, in operation, the optically-transmissive layer can be configured to transmit a particular optical radiation at the distal end thereof toward a target tissue.

Claims (31)

1. An insertion apparatus, comprising:

a needle having a lumen extending therethrough along a length thereof, the needle having a distal end configured to puncture tissue to enable the insertion apparatus to access a target underlying the tissue;

a cladding layer applied to and circumferentially surrounding the needle; and

an optically-transmissive coating applied to and circumferentially surrounding the cladding layer and provided at least at the distal end of the needle,

wherein, in operation, the optically-transmissive coating is configured to transmit a particular optical radiation at the distal end thereof toward the target after the tissue is punctured.

2. The insertion apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cladding layer has an optical index that is different from an optical index of the optically-transmissive coating.

3. The insertion apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the optically-transmissive coating is configured to transmit the optical radiation in a first direction, and the cladding layer is configured to transmit a further optical radiation in a second direction which is opposite to the first direction.

4. The insertion apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cladding layer is configured to transmit a further optical radiation from the tissue, and wherein the further optical radiation is based on the particular optical radiation.

5. The insertion apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a further cladding layer circumferentially surrounding the optically-transmissive coating; and

a further optically-transmissive coating circumferentially surrounding the further cladding layer.

6. The insertion apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the optically-transmissive coating and the further optically-transmissive coating are configured to transmit the particular optical radiation in a first direction, and the cladding layer and the further cladding layer are configured to transmit a further optical radiation in a second direction which is opposite to the first direction.

7. The insertion apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the cladding layer and the further cladding layer are configured to transmit further optical radiation from the tissue, and wherein the further optical radiation is based on the particular optical radiation.

8. The insertion apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an optical multiplexer configured to multiplex the particular optical radiation provided to the tissue and a return optical radiation provided from the tissue which is associated with the particular optical radiation.

9. The insertion apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising a hardware processing arrangement configured to:

receive information related to the return optical radiation; and

determine data, based on the information, which is at least one of (i) at least one characteristic of the tissue, (ii) at least one location of a target area of the tissue, or (iii) a location of a tip of the needle with respect to the tissue.

10. The insertion apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising at least one audio device configured to cause a sound to be produced based on the data.

11. The insertion apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the lumen is configured to at least one of (i) have a pharmacological agent injected there through, or (ii) have a biopsy sample obtained there through.

12. The insertion apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the optically-transmissive coating includes at least one helical-patterned structure which define an outer patterned section of the insertion apparatus.

13. The insertion apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the insertion apparatus is configured to determine a three-dimensional location of at least one portion of the insertion apparatus based on information received by a computer hardware arrangement from the optically-transmissive coating which is associated with a return optical radiation provided from the tissue which is based on a particular optical radiation.

14. A method of determining information associated with at least one target tissue of a patient, comprising:

inserting a needle into the patient to access the target tissue by puncturing an outer tissue structure of the patient so as to make a hole through the outer tissue structure, the needle having formed thereon a cladding layer applied to and circumferentially surrounding the needle and an optically-transmissive coating applied to and circumferentially surrounding an exterior of the cladding layer;

transmitting, to the target tissue, a first optical radiation through at least one of the optically-transmissive coating and the cladding layer after the outer tissue is punctured;

receiving, from the target tissue, at a processor, a second optical radiation via at least another of the optically-transmissive coating and the cladding layer based on the first optical radiation after the outer tissue is punctured; and

determining, by the processor, based on the second optical radiation, data characterizing at least one of (i) at least one characteristic of the target tissue, (ii) at least one location of the target tissue, and (iii) a location of a tip of the needle with respect to the target tissue.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising at least one of (i) administering a pharmacological agent to the patient through a lumen of the elongate insertion apparatus, (ii) exposing the pharmacological agent to optical radiation, and (iii) obtaining a biopsy sample from the patient through the lumen.
