Abstract

An accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL) for implantation within a capsular bag of a patient's eye comprises first and second components coupled together to define an inner fluid chamber and an outer fluid reservoir. The inner region of the AIOL provides optical power with one or more of the shaped fluid within the inner fluid chamber or the shape of the first or second components. The fluid reservoir comprises a bellows region with fold(s) extending circumferentially around an optical axis of the eye. The bellows engages the lens capsule, and a compliant fold region between inner and outer bellows portions allows the profile of the AIOL to deflect when the eye accommodates for near vision. Fluid transfers between the inner fluid chamber and the outer fluid reservoir to provide optical power changes. A third lens component coupled to the first or second component provides additional optical power.

Claims (30)

1. An accommodating intraocular lens assembly, comprising:

a base including an adjustable power lens with an optical axis, wherein an optical power of the adjustable power lens changes dynamically in reaction to a radial force on the base in a direction non-parallel to the optical axis; and

an exchangeable fixed power lens configured to be removably coupled to the base, wherein, when the fixed power lens is removably coupled to the base and in a native eye capsule of an eye of an individual, the fixed power lens is positioned anterior to and spaced apart from the adjustable power lens.

2. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 1 wherein, when the fixed power lens is removably coupled to the base, the fixed power lens is aligned with the adjustable power lens along the optical axis.

3. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 1 wherein a thickness of the adjustable power lens, in a direction parallel to the optical axis, changes in reaction to radial force on the base in a direction non-parallel to the optical axis.

4. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 1 wherein, when the fixed power lens is removably coupled to the base, the base includes a groove configured to receive at least a portion of the fixed power lens.

5. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 1 wherein the base includes a haptic connected to the adjustable power lens, and wherein the haptic is configured to receive a radial force that causes the adjustable power lens to change optical power.

6. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 5 wherein the haptic is an annular bellows configured to push fluid into the adjustable power lens when a radially-compressive force is applied to the bellows.

7. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 1 wherein the adjustable power lens includes a radially-outer wall having one or more openings therein.

8. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 7 wherein the base includes a haptic reservoir in fluid communication with the adjustable power lens via the one or more openings.

9. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 1 wherein a width of the adjustable power lens, as measured perpendicular to the optical axis, remains constant as the adjustable power lens changes optical power.

10. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 1 wherein the fixed power lens is configured to be both removably coupled with and decoupled from the base when the base is implanted in the native eye capsule of the eye of the individual.

11. An accommodating intraocular lens assembly, comprising:

a base having a fluid lens with an optical axis, the fluid lens configured to dynamically change shape along the optical axis in reaction to radial force on the base in a direction non-parallel to the optical axis; and

an exchangeable fixed power lens configured to be removably coupled to the base, wherein, when the fixed power lens is removably coupled to the base and in an eye of a patient, the fixed power lens is positioned anterior to the fluid lens.

12. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 11 wherein the fluid lens is configured to dynamically change optical power along the optical axis in reaction to the radial force on the base in a direction non-parallel to the optical axis.

13. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 11 wherein:

the base includes an annular haptic structure connected to the fluid lens,

the annular haptic structure includes a fluid reservoir in fluid communication with the fluid lens, and

the annular haptic structure is configured to transfer fluid into the fluid lens when the radial force is applied to the base.

The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 13 wherein the base includes an annular wall between the fluid lens and the annular haptic structure, and wherein the annular wall includes one or more openings configured to permit fluid to pass between the fluid reservoir and the fluid lens.

15. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 11 wherein the fluid lens comprises a silicon oil.

16. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 11 wherein a volume of the fluid lens increases in reaction to the radial force on the base.

17. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 11 wherein a thickness of the fixed power lens, as measured parallel to the optical axis, remains constant when the radial force is applied to the base.

18. An accommodating intraocular lens assembly, comprising:

a base having a first optical component and a second optical component spaced from the first optical component along an optical axis of the base, wherein the first and second optical components are configured to move with respect to each other along the optical axis in reaction to radial force on the base in a direction non-parallel to the optical axis; and

an exchangeable fixed power lens configured to be removably coupled to the base, wherein, when the fixed power lens is removably coupled to the base and in an eye of a patient, the fixed power lens is positioned anterior to the base.

The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 18 wherein the base includes an annular outer wall at an outer periphery of the first and second optical components, wherein the outer wall is formed by one or both of the first and second optical components, and wherein the outer wall includes one or more openings therein.

The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 19 wherein the base includes a haptic volume at least partially surrounding one or both of the first and second optical components, and wherein the haptic volume is in fluid communication with a space between the first and second optical components.

21. The accommodating intraocular lens assembly of claim 18 wherein the base includes an optical chamber between the first and second optical components, and wherein the optical chamber is configured to change shape when the first and second optical components move with respect to each other.
