Abstract

A cartridge includes a casing, a photosensitive drum rotatably supported by the casing, a charging roller rotatably supported by the casing, and a developing roller rotatably supported by the casing. A shield member is supported by the casing and including a shield portion capable of covering a photosensitive member, the shield member being movable between a first position in which the shield portion covers the photosensitive member and a second position in which the photosensitive member is more exposed to outside of the cartridge by the shield portion than when the shield member is in the first position. An engaging portion is engageable with the shield member to hold the shield member in the second position when the shield member is in the second position, and a force receiving portion is provided for receiving an external force to disengage the engagement between the engaging portion and the shield member.

Claims (41)

1 . A cartridge comprising:

a casing;

a photosensitive drum rotatably supported by the casing;

a charging roller rotatably supported by the casing;

a developing roller rotatably supported by the casing;

a shield member supported by the casing and including a shield portion capable of covering a photosensitive drum, the shield member being movable between a first position in which the shield portion covers the photosensitive drum and a second position in which the photosensitive drum is more exposed to outside of the cartridge by the shield portion than when the shield member is in the first position;

an engaging portion engageable with the shield member to hold the shield member in the second position when the shield member is in the second position, and

a force receiving portion for receiving an external force to disengage the engagement between the engaging portion and the shield member,

wherein, as seen in a direction of a rotational axis of the developing roller, when the cartridge is divided by a line connecting a rotational axis of the photosensitive drum and the rotational axis of the developing roller into a first area in which the charging roller is positioned and a second area, (i) the shield portion is positioned in the first area when the shield member is in the first position, and (ii) the force receiving portion is positioned in the second area when the shield member is in the second position.

2 . A cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a recess provided on one of the shield member and the engaging portion and recessed in a direction perpendicular to a moving direction of the shield member,

a projection provided on the other of the shield member and the engaging portion and movable in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction, the projection engaging with the recess when the shield member is in the second position, and

a force applying portion configured to apply a force to the projection to move the projection in a direction of retracting from the recess when the shield member moves from the second position toward the first position.

3 . A cartridge according to claim 2 , wherein the force applying portion is a contact surface between the recess and the projection, the contact surface being inclined relative to the moving direction of the shield member and a moving direction of the projection.

4 . A cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a first recess and a second recess which are provided on the shield member and which are recessed in a direction perpendicular to a moving direction of the shield member,

a projection which is movable in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction and which is engaged with the first recess when the shield member is in the first position and is engaged with the second recess when the shield member is in the second position,

a first force applying portion configured to apply a force to the projection to move the projection in a direction of retracting from the first recess when the shield member moves from the first position toward the second position, and

a second force applying portion configured to apply a force to the projection to move the projection in a direction of retracting from the second recess when the shield member moves from the second position toward the first position.

5 . A cartridge according to claim 4 , wherein the first force applying portion is a contact surface between the first recess and the projection, the contact surface being inclined relative to the moving direction of the shield member and a moving direction of the projection, and

wherein the second force applying portion is a contact surface between the second recess and the projection, the contact surface being inclined relative to the moving direction of the shield member and a moving direction of the projection.

6 . A cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a first recess and a second recess which are recessed in a direction perpendicular to a moving direction of the shield member,

a projection which is provided on the shield member and which is movable in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction and which is engaged with the first recess when the shield member is in the first position and is engaged with the second recess when the shield member is in the second position,

a first force applying portion configured to apply a force to the projection to move the projection in a direction of retracting from the first recess when the shield member moves from the first position toward the second position, and

a second force applying portion configured to apply a force to the projection to move the projection in a direction of retracting from the second recess when the shield member moves from the second position toward the first position.

7 . A cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a recess provided on the shield member and recessed in a direction perpendicular to a moving direction of the shield member,

a first projection which is movable in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction and which engages with the recess when the shield member is in the first position,

a second projection which is movable in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction and which engages with the recess when the shield member is in the second position,

a first force applying portion for applying a force to the first projection to retract the first projection from the recess when the shield member moves from the first position toward the second position, and

a second force applying portion for applying a force to the second projection to retract the second projection from the recess when the shield member moves from the second position toward the first position.

8 . A cartridge according to claim 7 , wherein the first force applying portion is a contact surface between the recess and the first projection, the contact surface being inclined relative to the moving direction of the shield member and the moving direction of the first projection, and

wherein the second force applying portion is a contact surface between the recess and the second projection, the contact surface being inclined relative to the moving direction of the shield member and the moving direction of the second projection.

9 . A cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a recess recessed in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the shield member,

a first projection which is provided on the shield member and which is movable in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction and which engages with the recess when the shield member is in the first position,

a second projection which is provided on the shield member and which is movable in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction and which engages with the recess when the shield member is in the second position,

a first force applying portion configured to apply a force to the first projection to move the first projection in a direction of retracting from the recess when the shield member moves from the first position to the second position, and

a second force applying portion configured to apply a force to the second projection to move the second projection in a direction of retracting from the recess when the shield member moves from the second position to the first position.

10 . A cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the shield portion covers a part of a surface of the photosensitive drum that is positioned downstream of the charging roller and upstream of the developing roller in a direction the surface of the photosensitive drum moves during an image forming process using the charging roller and the developing roller.
