Abstract

A fastener cartridge including a cartridge body and a layer mounted to said cartridge body is disclosed. The cartridge body can include projections extending therefrom and the layer can include apertures which correspond to the projections. The projections and the apertures can form a releasable interference fit therebetween to secure the layer to the cartridge body.

Claims (44)

1. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck;

fastener cavities defined in said deck, wherein said fastener cavities are arranged in a longitudinal row, and wherein said fastener cavities comprise a proximal fastener cavity and a distal fastener cavity in said longitudinal row; and

projections extending from said deck, wherein said projections are arranged in a longitudinal projection row and define a gradient maximum heights along said longitudinal projection row, wherein said projections comprise a first projection and a second projection, and wherein said first projection is positioned intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity;

fasteners removably stored in said fastener cavities; and

a layer of material supported by said deck, said layer of material comprising:

a layer body; and

apertures defined in said layer body, wherein said projections are positioned in said apertures, wherein said apertures comprise a first aperture aligned with said first projection intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity, and wherein said first aperture comprises a through hole;

wherein an interference fit between said first projection and said first aperture is configured to releasably retain said layer of material to said cartridge body at a first location intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity, wherein said first projection is configured to directly engage tissue positioned intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity upon a compression of said cartridge body against tissue to limit tissue flow at said first location intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity, and wherein said second projection is configured to directly engage tissue positioned intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity upon a compression of said cartridge body against tissue to limit tissue flow at a second location intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity.

2. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said projections are positioned intermediate said fastener cavities.

3. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said projections extend said fastener cavities above said deck.

4. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said projections are configured to guide said fasteners when said fasteners are ejected from said fastener cavities.

5. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said apertures comprise through holes.

6. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said layer of material comprises a buttress material.

7. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said layer of material comprises a tissue thickness compensator.

8. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck;

fastener cavities defined in said deck, wherein said fastener cavities are arranged in a longitudinal row, wherein said fastener cavities comprise a proximal fastener cavity and a distal fastener cavity in said longitudinal row, and wherein each said fastener cavity comprises a proximal end and a distal end; and

a plurality of projections extending from said deck, wherein said projections are arranged in a plurality of longitudinal projection rows and define a gradient maximum heights along said longitudinal projection rows, wherein said plurality of projections comprises a plurality of proximal projections extending from said deck, wherein each said proximal projection is positioned at a said proximal end of a said fastener cavity, wherein said proximal projections comprise a first proximal projection, wherein said plurality of projections further comprises a plurality of distal projections extending from said deck, wherein each said distal projection is positioned at a said distal end of a said fastener cavity, wherein said distal projections comprise a first distal projection;

fasteners removably stored in said fastener cavities; and

a layer of material supported by said deck, said layer of material comprising:

a layer body;

proximal apertures defined in said layer body, wherein each said proximal aperture is configured to receive a said proximal projection, and wherein said proximal apertures comprise a first proximal aperture positioned intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity; and

wherein said proximal apertures and said distal apertures comprise through holes; and

wherein an interference fit between said first proximal aperture and said first proximal projection and between said first distal aperture and said first distal projection is configured to releasably retain said layer of material to said cartridge body at intermediate locations between said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity, and wherein said first proximal projection and said first distal projection are configured to directly engage tissue positioned intermediate said proximal fastener cavity and said distal fastener cavity upon a compression of said cartridge body against tissue.

9. The fastener cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said distal projections extend said fastener cavities above said deck, and wherein said distal projections are configured to guide said fasteners when said fasteners are ejected from said fastener cavities.

10. The fastener cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said proximal projections extend said fastener cavities above said deck, and wherein said proximal projections are configured to guide said fasteners when said fasteners are ejected from said fastener cavities.

11. The fastener cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said layer of material comprises a buttress material.

12. The fastener cartridge of claim 8 , wherein said layer of material comprises a tissue thickness compensator.

13. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck;

fastener cavities defined in said deck, wherein said fastener cavities are arranged in a longitudinal row, and wherein said fastener cavities comprise a proximal fastener cavity and a distal fastener cavity in said longitudinal row; and
