Abstract

A surgical instrument is disclosed which comprises a tissue clamping system, a staple firing system, and a tissue cutting system. The systems of the surgical instrument can co-operate with one another to prevent the systems from being operated out of order, and/or prevent the systems from being operated in an undesirable order.

Claims (72)

1. A surgical stapler for treating the tissue of a patient, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector is configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw toward said first jaw;

a firing system, comprising:

a staple driver, wherein said firing system is configured to push said staple driver toward said anvil during a firing stroke and retract said staple driver during a retraction stroke; and

a cutting member configured to cut the tissue during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises a cutting edge which is exposed from said cartridge body during said cutting stroke; and

means for preventing said staple driver from being retracted while said cutting member is exposed.

2. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said means permits said end effector to be returned to said open configuration during said firing stroke.

3. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said means permits said end effector to be returned to said open configuration after said firing stroke is completed and before said cutting stroke is initiated.

4. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said means permits said end effector to be returned to said open configuration after said firing stroke is completed and before said cutting member is exposed.

5. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising:

a tissue pin movable between an undeployed position and a deployed position, wherein said tissue pin is configured to trap the tissue within said end effector; and

a tissue pin actuator configured to extend said tissue pin between said undeployed position and said deployed position during a deployment stroke and withdraw said tissue pin toward said undeployed position during a withdrawal stroke, wherein said means prevents said tissue pin from being withdrawn toward said undeployed position during said cutting stroke.

6. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising:

a tissue pin movable between an undeployed position and a deployed position, wherein said tissue pin is configured to trap the tissue within said end effector; and

a tissue pin actuator configured to extend said tissue pin between said undeployed position and said deployed position during a deployment stroke and withdraw said tissue pin toward said undeployed position during a withdrawal stroke, wherein said means prevents said tissue pin from being withdrawn toward said undeployed position during said firing stroke.

7. A surgical stapler for treating the tissue of a patient, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector is configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a tissue pin movable between an undeployed position and a deployed position, wherein said tissue pin is configured to trap the tissue within said end effector;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw toward said first jaw;

a tissue pin actuator configured to move said tissue pin between said undeployed position and said deployed position during a deployment stroke and retract said tissue pin toward said undeployed position during a retraction stroke;

a firing system, comprising:

a staple driver, wherein said firing system is configured to push said staple driver toward said anvil during a firing stroke; and

a cutting member configured to cut the tissue during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises a cutting edge which is exposed from said cartridge body during said cutting stroke; and

a lock pin configured to engage a portion of said cartridge body to prevent said tissue pin from being retracted while said cutting member is exposed.

8. The surgical stapler of claim 7 , wherein said lock pin engages another portion of said cartridge body to permit said end effector to be returned to said open configuration during said firing stroke.

9. A surgical stapler for treating the tissue of a patient, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector is configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a tissue pin movable between an undeployed position and a deployed position, wherein said tissue pin is configured to trap the tissue within said end effector;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw toward said first jaw;

a tissue pin actuator configured to move said tissue pin between said undeployed position and said deployed position during a deployment stroke and retract said tissue pin toward said undeployed position during a retraction stroke;

a firing system, comprising:

a staple driver, wherein said firing system is configured to push said staple driver toward said anvil during a firing stroke; and

a cutting member configured to cut the tissue during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises a cutting edge which is exposed from said cartridge body during said cutting stroke; and

means for preventing said tissue pin from being retracted while said cutting member is exposed, wherein said means permits said end effector to be returned to said open configuration after said firing stroke is completed and before said cutting stroke is initiated.

10. A surgical stapler for treating the tissue of a patient, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector is configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a tissue pin movable between an undeployed position and a deployed position, wherein said tissue pin is configured to trap the tissue within said end effector;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw toward said first jaw;

a tissue pin actuator configured to move said tissue pin between said undeployed position and said deployed position during a deployment stroke and retract said tissue pin toward said undeployed position during a retraction stroke;

a firing system, comprising:

a staple driver, wherein said firing system is configured to push said staple driver toward said anvil during a firing stroke; and

a cutting member configured to cut the tissue during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises a cutting edge which is exposed from said cartridge body during said cutting stroke; and
