Abstract

A method for producing a surgical instrument is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining a handle, wherein the handle comprises a distal end comprising a shaft interface surface and a first set of magnetic elements. The method further comprises obtaining a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a proximal end comprising a handle interface surface, a second set of magnetic elements, and a third set of magnetic elements. The method further comprises attaching the shaft to the handle, wherein the shaft interface surface is configured to engage the shaft at the handle interface surface, wherein an attractive magnetic force is configured to pull the handle towards the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interact with the second magnetic elements, and wherein a repulsive magnetic force is configured to repel the handle from the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interacts with the third set of magnetic elements.

Claims (42)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a first shaft attachable to said housing, wherein said first shaft comprises:

a first processor; and

a first memory coupled to said first processor, wherein said first memory stores a first set of instructions which, when executed, cause said first processor to initiate a desired function;

a second shaft attachable to said housing, wherein said second shaft comprises:

a second processor; and

a second memory coupled to said second processor, wherein said second memory stores a second set of instructions which, when executed, cause said second processor to initiate a desired function; and

a power source comprising a battery, wherein said power source is directly attachable to said housing without having to disassemble said housing, wherein said power source is selectively attachable to said housing at a first location and a second location, wherein said first location provides a first grip arrangement and said second location provides a second grip arrangement, wherein said first grip arrangement is different from said second grip arrangement and wherein no continuous circuits are present in said housing until said power source is attached to said housing.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said housing comprises a drive motor operable by a control system in said first shaft.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first shaft comprises a diameter that is less than 10 millimeters.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first set of instructions stored by said first memory is specific to said first shaft.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said second set of instructions stored by said first memory is specific to said second shaft.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first set of instructions is different than said second set of instructions.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein there are no continuous circuits within said housing while said housing is unattached to said first shaft and said power source.

8. A modular surgical instrument, comprising:

a handle comprising a first mounting interface defined on an exterior surface and a second mounting interface defined on the exterior surface;

an elongate shaft extending distally from said handle, wherein said elongate shaft comprises:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to said processor, wherein said memory stores instructions which, when executed, cause said processor to initiate a desired function;

an end effector extending distally from said elongate shaft;

a first power source comprising a first battery, wherein said first power source is selectively attachable to said first mounting interface and said second mounting interface; and

a second power source comprising a second battery, wherein said second power source is selectively attachable to said first mounting interface and said second mounting interface, and wherein no continuous circuits are present in said handle until at least one of said first power source or said second power source is attached to at least one of said first mounting interface or said second mounting interface.

9. The modular surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said handle comprises a drive motor operable by a control system in said elongate shaft.

10. The modular surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said elongate shaft comprises a diameter that is less than 10 millimeters.

11. The modular surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said instructions stored by said memory are specific to said elongate shaft.

12. The modular surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said first mounting interface provides a first grip arrangement, wherein said second mounting interface provides a second grip arrangement, and wherein said first grip arrangement is different from said second grip arrangement.

13. The modular surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said first power source is a different size than said second power source.

14. The modular surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said first battery comprises a first quantity of battery cells, and wherein said second battery comprises a second quantity of battery cells, wherein said first quantity of battery cells is different from said second quantity of battery cells.

15. A modular surgical instrument, comprising:

a handle comprising a first mounting interface defined on an exterior surface and a second mounting interface defined on the exterior surface;

an elongate shaft extending distally from said handle, wherein said elongate shaft comprises:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to said processor, wherein said memory stores instructions which, when executed, cause said processor to initiate a desired function;

an end effector extending distally from said elongate shaft;

a first power source comprising a first battery, wherein said first power source is selectively attachable to said first mounting interface; and

a second power source comprising a second battery, wherein said second power source is selectively attachable to said second mounting interface, wherein said first power source is prevented from selectively attaching to said second mounting interface, wherein said second power source is prevented from selectively attaching to said first mounting interface, and wherein no continuous circuits are present in said handle until at least one of said first power source is attached to said first mounting face or said second power source is attached to said second mounting interface.

16. The modular surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein said handle comprises a drive motor operable by a control system in said elongate shaft.

17. The modular surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein said elongate shaft comprises a diameter that is less than 10 millimeters.

18. The modular surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein said instructions stored by said memory are specific to said elongate shaft.

19. The modular surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein said first mounting interface provides a first grip arrangement, wherein said second mounting interface provides a second grip arrangement, and wherein said first grip arrangement is different from said second grip arrangement.

20. The modular surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein said first power source is a different size than said second power source.
