Abstract

Surgical instruments having a rotary drive that can selectively actuate multiple end effector functions are described herein. In at least one embodiment, a surgical instrument includes an outer shaft, an end effector coupled to the outer shaft, a rotatable drive shaft coaxially disposed within an inner lumen of the outer shaft, and a plurality of selectively engageable clutches configured to transfer torque from the rotatable drive shaft to the end effector. Each of the clutches is configured to convert the rotation of the drive shaft into one of a plurality of movements of the end effector relative to the outer shaft.

Claims (43)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an outer shaft;

an end effector coupled to the outer shaft;

a rotatable drive shaft coaxially disposed within an inner lumen of the outer shaft; and

a plurality of selectively engageable clutches configured to transfer torque from the rotatable drive shaft to the end effector, wherein each of the plurality of clutches is configured to convert rotation of the drive shaft into one of a plurality of movements of the end effector relative to the outer shaft, and wherein simultaneously engaging two or more of the plurality of clutches releases the end effector such that it can be decoupled from the outer shaft.

The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of selectively engageable lockouts that are each configured to prevent decoupling of the end effector and the outer shaft, wherein each selectively engageable lockout corresponds to one of the plurality of clutches, and wherein each selectively engageable lockout is configured to be in a locked state when the clutch is in a disengaged state and an unlocked state when the clutch is in an engaged state.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein one of the plurality of lockouts is a pivoting lever.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein one of the plurality of lockouts is a translating member.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of lockouts, wherein each lockout is configured to prevent one of the end effector movements when the corresponding clutch is in a disengaged state.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein one of the end effector movements comprises rotation of the end effector.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein one of the end effector movements comprises actuation of an end effector function.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein the end effector comprises first and second jaws configured to grasp tissue therebetween, and wherein actuation of the end effector function comprises moving the first and second jaws between an open configuration and a closed configuration.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein each clutch is electrically actuated.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein each clutch includes an electromagnet.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein each clutch is configured to be in a disengaged state in the absence of current flow to the electromagnet.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the electromagnets are disposed along a non-rotating elongate member coaxially disposed within an inner lumen of the rotating drive shaft.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein each clutch further comprises a permanent magnet disposed around the rotating drive shaft and configured to translate proximally and distally relative to the rotating drive shaft.

14. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an outer shaft;

an end effector coupled to the outer shaft;

a rotatable drive shaft coaxially disposed within an inner lumen of the outer shaft;

a first selectively engageable clutch disposed along a distal portion of the rotatable drive shaft that is configured to transfer torque from the drive shaft to cause a first movement of the end effector;

a second selectively engageable clutch disposed along a portion of the rotatable drive shaft that is proximal to the first clutch, the second clutch being configured to transfer torque from the drive shaft to cause a second movement of the end effector;

a first selectively engageable lockout configured to prevent decoupling of the end effector and the outer shaft; and

a second selectively engageable lockout configured to prevent decoupling of the end effector and the outer shaft, wherein the first lockout is configured to be in a locked state when the first clutch is in a disengaged state and an unlocked state when the first clutch is in an engaged state, wherein the second lockout is configured to be in a locked state when the second clutch is in a disengaged state and to be in an unlocked state when the second clutch is in an engaged state, and wherein the end effector can be decoupled from the outer shaft when the first clutch and the second clutch are simultaneously in their engaged states.

The surgical instrument of claim 14 , further comprising a third selectively engageable clutch disposed along a portion of the rotatable drive shaft that is proximal to the second clutch, wherein the third clutch being is configured to transfer torque from the drive shaft to cause a third movement of the end effector.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the first movement is actuation of an end effector function.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein the end effector comprises first and second jaws configured to grasp tissue therebetween, and wherein actuation of the end effector function comprises moving the first and second jaws between an open configuration and a closed configuration.

18. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein the second movement is rotation of the end effector.

19. The surgical instrument of claim 18 , further comprising a third selectively engageable clutch disposed along a portion of the rotatable drive shaft that is proximal to the second clutch, wherein the third clutch is configured to transfer torque from the drive shaft to cause articulation of the end effector.

20. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein each clutch includes an electromagnet.

21. The surgical instrument of claim 20 , wherein each electromagnet is disposed along a non-rotating elongate member coaxially disposed within an inner lumen of the drive shaft.

22. The surgical instrument of claim 20 , wherein each clutch further comprises a permanent magnet disposed around the rotating drive shaft and configured to translate proximally and distally relative to the rotating drive shaft.

23. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the first lockout includes a translating member.

24. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the second lockout includes a pivoting lever.

25. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an outer shaft;

an end effector releasably attachable to the outer shaft;

a rotatable drive shaft positioned within an inner lumen of the outer shaft;

a first selectively engageable clutch configured to transfer torque from the rotatable drive shaft to the end effector, wherein the first clutch is configured to convert rotation of the drive shaft into a first movement of the end effector relative to the outer shaft; and

a second selectively engageable clutch configured to transfer torque from the rotatable drive shaft to the end effector, wherein the second clutch is configured to convert rotation of the drive shaft into a second movement of the end effector relative to the outer shaft, and wherein simultaneously engaging the first clutch and the second clutch releases the end effector such that the end effector can be detached from the outer shaft.

26. The surgical instrument of claim 25 , wherein one of the first movement of the end effector and the second movement of the end effector comprises rotation of the end effector.

27. The surgical instrument of claim 25 , wherein one of the first movement of the end effector and the second movement of the end effector comprises actuation of an end effector function.
