Abstract

A stapling device comprising a shaft having a locked state and an unlocked state, an anvil, and a replaceable staple cartridge attachable to the shaft is disclosed. The staple cartridge comprises a cartridge body, staples removably stored in the cartridge body, a metal pan attached to the cartridge body, and a sled. The stapling device further comprises a firing member movable longitudinally through a staple firing stroke when the shaft is in the unlocked state. The firing member comprises an anvil cam configured to engage the anvil and a cartridge cam configured to engage the staple cartridge. The stapling device further comprises a lock. The anvil cam is positioned vertically above the lock and the cartridge cam is positioned vertically below the lock. The lock is movable vertically relative to the metal pan when the shaft is placed in its unlocked state.

Claims (84)

1. A stapling device, comprising:

a shaft having a locked state and an unlocked state;

an anvil;

a replaceable staple cartridge attachable to said shaft, comprising:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a metal pan attached to said cartridge body; and

a sled;

a firing member movable longitudinally through a staple firing stroke when said shaft is in said unlocked state, wherein said firing member comprises:

an anvil cam configured to engage said anvil; and

a cartridge cam configured to engage said staple cartridge; and

a lock, wherein said anvil cam is positioned vertically above said lock and said cartridge cam is positioned vertically below said lock, and wherein said lock is movable vertically relative to said metal pan when said shaft is placed in its unlocked state.

2. A stapling device, comprising:

a shaft configurable in a locked configuration and an unlocked configuration;

an anvil;

a replaceable staple cartridge attachable to said shaft, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end positioned opposite said proximal end; and

a vertical slot extending longitudinally from said proximal end toward said distal end;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a metal pan attached to said cartridge body; and

a sled;

a firing member movable longitudinally through a staple firing stroke when said shaft is in said unlocked configuration, wherein said firing member comprises:

an anvil cam configured to engage said anvil; and

a cartridge cam configured to engage said staple cartridge; and

a lock shoulder, wherein said anvil cam is positioned vertically above said lock shoulder and said cartridge cam is positioned vertically below said lock shoulder, and wherein said lock shoulder is movable vertically relative to said metal pan when said shaft is placed in its unlocked configuration.

3. A stapling device, comprising:

a shaft configurable in a locked configuration and an unlocked configuration;

an anvil;

a replaceable staple cartridge attachable to said shaft to place said shaft in said unlocked configuration, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end positioned opposite said proximal end; and

a vertical slot extending longitudinally from said proximal end toward said distal end;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a metal pan attached to said cartridge body; and

a sled;

a firing member movable longitudinally through a staple firing stroke when said shaft is in said unlocked configuration, wherein said firing member comprises:

an anvil cam configured to engage said anvil; and

a cartridge cam configured to engage said staple cartridge; and

a lock shoulder, wherein said anvil cam is positioned vertically above said lock shoulder and said cartridge cam is positioned vertically below said lock shoulder, and wherein said lock shoulder is displaceable vertically relative to said metal pan when said staple cartridge is attached to said shaft.

4. A stapling device, comprising:

a shaft having a locked state and an unlocked state;

an anvil;

a replaceable staple cartridge attachable to said shaft to place said shaft in its unlocked state, comprising:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a metal pan attached to said cartridge body; and

a sled;

a staple firing system, comprising:

an anvil cam configured to engage said anvil;

a cartridge cam configured to engage said staple cartridge; and

a lock, wherein said anvil cam is positioned vertically above said lock and said cartridge cam is positioned vertically below said lock, and wherein said lock is movable vertically relative to said metal pan when said shaft is placed in its unlocked state.

5. A stapling device, comprising:

a shaft configurable in a locked configuration and an unlocked configuration;

an anvil;

a replaceable staple cartridge attachable to said shaft, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end positioned opposite said proximal end; and

a vertical slot extending longitudinally from said proximal end toward said distal end;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a metal pan attached to said cartridge body; and

a sled;

a staple firing system, comprising:

an anvil cam configured to engage said anvil;

a cartridge cam configured to engage said staple cartridge; and

a lock shoulder, wherein said anvil cam is positioned vertically above said lock shoulder and said cartridge cam is positioned vertically below said lock shoulder, and wherein said lock shoulder is movable vertically relative to said metal pan when said shaft is placed in its unlocked configuration.

6. A stapling device, comprising:

a shaft configurable in a locked configuration and an unlocked configuration;

an anvil;

a replaceable staple cartridge attachable to said shaft to place said shaft in said unlocked configuration, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end positioned opposite said proximal end; and

a vertical slot extending longitudinally from said proximal end toward said distal end;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a metal pan attached to said cartridge body; and

a sled;
