Abstract

In various embodiments, a stapling assembly is disclosed. The stapling assembly comprises, among other things, an anvil configured to deform staples. The anvil comprises a tissue-engaging surface and a pair of forming pockets defined in the tissue-engaging surface and aligned along a longitudinal pocket axis, wherein the pair of forming pockets is configured to deform corresponding legs of a staple. The pair of forming pockets comprises a proximal forming pocket and a distal forming pocket. Each pocket comprises a pair of sidewalls extending between the forming surface and the tissue-engaging surface. Each sidewall comprises discrete sidewall portions oriented at different angles with respect to the tissue-engaging surface.

Claims (46)

1. A stapling assembly, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;

a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples; and

an anvil configured to deform said staples, said anvil comprising:

a tissue-engaging surface; and

a pair of forming pockets defined in said tissue-engaging surface and aligned along a longitudinal pocket axis, wherein said pair of forming pockets is configured to deform corresponding legs of a said staple, and wherein said pair of forming pockets comprises:

a proximal forming pocket, comprising:

a forming surface, wherein said forming surface comprises an entry zone comprising a first radius of curvature and an exit zone comprising a second radius of curvature, and wherein said first radius of curvature and said second radius of curvature are different;

a pair of sidewalls extending between said forming surface and said tissue-engaging surface, wherein each said sidewall comprises:

 a first discrete sidewall portion defining a first plane oriented at a first angle with respect to said tissue-engaging surface, wherein said first discrete sidewall portion extends from said tissue-engaging surface to said entry zone;

 a second discrete sidewall portion defining a second plane oriented at a second angle with respect to said tissue-engaging surface, wherein said first angle and said second angle are different, and wherein said second discrete sidewall portion extends from said tissue-engaging surface to said exit zone; and

 a sidewall transition feature between said first discrete sidewall portion and said second discrete sidewall portion, wherein said sidewall transition feature extends from said tissue-engaging surface to said forming surface; and

a distal forming pocket.

2. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said second plane is angled with respect to said longitudinal pocket axis.

3. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said second angle is greater than said first angle.

4. The stapling assembly of claim 3 , wherein said second angle is between 80 degrees and 90 degrees.

5. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein each said sidewall of said pair of sidewalls further comprises a central sidewall portion extending between said tissue-engaging surface and said second discrete sidewall portion.

6. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein a transition between said forming surface and each said sidewall of said pair of sidewalls comprises a fillet edge.

7. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall transition feature between said discrete sidewall portions comprises a fillet edge.

8. The stapling assembly of claim 7 , wherein the sidewall transition feature between said discrete sidewall portions intersects said forming surface at a transition between said entry zone and said exit zone.

9. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said pair of forming pockets define a ridge there between, and wherein said forming surface comprises:

a first end comprising a first width;

a second end comprising a second width, wherein said second width is less than said first width, and wherein said second end defines an edge of said ridge; and

a valley positioned between said first end and said second end, wherein said valley comprises a third width that is less than said second width.

10. The stapling assembly of claim 9 , wherein said valley is closer to said second end than said first end.

11. The stapling assembly of claim 9 , wherein each said staple comprises a staple diameter, wherein said staple diameter is between 0.0079 inches and 0.0094 inches, and wherein said third width is greater than 0.0094 inches.

12. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said first radius of curvature and said second radius of curvature comprise a ratio of 1.5:1 to 3:1.

13. The stapling assembly of claim 12 , wherein said ratio is 2:1.

14. A stapling assembly, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;

a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples; and

an anvil configured to deform said staples, said anvil comprising:

a tissue-engaging surface; and

a pair of forming pockets defined in said tissue-engaging surface and aligned along a longitudinal pocket axis, wherein said pair of forming pockets is configured to deform corresponding legs of a said staple, and wherein said pair of forming pockets comprises:

a proximal forming pocket, comprising:

a forming surface, wherein said forming surface comprises an entry zone comprising a first radius of curvature and an exit zone comprising a second radius of curvature, and wherein said first radius of curvature and said second radius of curvature are different;

a pair of entry zone sidewalls extending from said tissue-engaging surface to said entry zone, wherein said entry zone sidewalls are oriented at a first angle with respect to said tissue-engaging surface;

a pair of exit zone sidewalls extending from said tissue-engaging surface to said exit zone, wherein said exit zone sidewalls are oriented at a second angle with respect to said tissue-engaging surface, wherein said first angle is less than said second angle; and

a pair of transitions between said pair of entry zone sidewalls and said pair of exit zone sidewalls, wherein said pair of transitions each extend from said tissue-engaging surface to said forming surface; and

a distal forming pocket.

15. The stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein said first radius of curvature and said second radius of curvature comprise a ratio of between 1.5:1 and 3:1.

16. The stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein said second angle is 90 degrees.

17. The stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said tissue-engaging surface and said entry zone are directly connected by said first discrete sidewall portion, and wherein said tissue-engaging surface and said exit zone are directly connected by said second discrete sidewall portion.
