Abstract

Surgical instruments are disclosed which comprise an improved staple firing and/or tissue cutting member. A surgical instrument comprising a first jaw and a second jaw is disclosed, wherein the second jaw is movable relative to the first jaw to capture the tissue of a patient between the first jaw and the second jaw. The surgical instrument further comprises a cutting member movable toward a distal jaw end during a cutting stroke. The cutting member comprises a coupling portion comprising a first cam configured to engage the first jaw, a second cam configured to engage the second jaw, and a body connecting the first cam and the second cam. The cutting member further comprises a bar attached to the coupling portion, wherein the bar comprises a cutting edge configured to cut the patient tissue during the cutting stroke.

Claims (50)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a distal jaw end;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw to capture tissue of a patient between said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a cutting member movable toward said distal jaw end during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises:

a coupling portion, comprising:

a first cam configured to engage said first jaw;

a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said cutting stroke; and

a body connecting said first cam and said second cam; and

a bar comprising a plurality of layers attached to said coupling portion, wherein said bar comprises a cutting edge configured to cut the tissue during said cutting stroke, and wherein at least a portion of said bar extends proximally beyond said coupling portion.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a staple cartridge including staples removably stored therein, wherein said cutting member is configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during said cutting stroke to staple the patient tissue.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said coupling portion further comprises a mounting recess, and wherein said bar comprises a distal bar end positioned in said mounting recess.

4. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a distal jaw end;

a second law movable relative to said first law to capture tissue of a patient between said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a cutting member movable toward said distal jaw end during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises:

a coupling portion, comprising:

a first cam configured to engage said first jaw;

a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said cutting stroke;

a body connecting said first cam and said second cam; and

a mounting recess, wherein said coupling portion further comprises a mounting projection within said mounting recess; and

a bar comprising a plurality of layers attached to said coupling portion, wherein said bar comprises a cutting edge configured to cut the tissue during said cutting stroke, wherein said bar comprises a distal bar end positioned in said mounting recess, and wherein said bar comprises a mounting aperture configured to receive said mounting projection such that dimensions of said mounting aperture match dimensions of said mounting projection.

5. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first law comprising a distal law end;

a second law movable relative to said first law to capture tissue of a patient between said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a cutting member movable toward said distal jaw end during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises:

a coupling portion, comprising:

a first cam configured to engage said first jaw;

a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said cutting stroke, wherein said coupling portion further comprises a plurality of mounting projections; and

a body connecting said first cam and said second cam; and

a bar comprising a plurality of layers attached to said coupling portion, wherein said bar comprises a cutting edge configured to cut the tissue during said cutting stroke, and wherein said bar comprises a plurality of mounting apertures configured to receive said mounting projections.

The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein said cutting member is movable along a longitudinal axis during said cutting stroke, and wherein said plurality of mounting projections comprises a first projection positioned along said longitudinal axis and a second projection positioned offset from said longitudinal axis.

The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein said cutting member is movable along a longitudinal axis during said cutting stroke, and wherein said plurality of mounting projections comprises a first projection positioned on a first side of said longitudinal axis and a second projection positioned on a second side of said longitudinal axis.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein said plurality of mounting projections comprises a proximal projection and a distal projection, and wherein said distal projection is positioned distally with respect to said proximal projection.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said coupling portion comprises a shoulder, and wherein said bar comprises a hook engaged with said shoulder.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of layers comprises a first layer and a second layer, and wherein said cutting edge is defined on said first layer and not defined on said second layer.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of layers comprises a first layer and a second layer, and wherein said cutting edge is defined on said first layer and said second layer.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of layers comprises a first layer, a second layer, and an intermediate layer positioned intermediate said first layer and said second layer, and wherein said coupling portion comprises:

a first lateral recess, wherein said first layer is mounted to said coupling portion in said first lateral recess;

a second lateral recess, wherein said second layer is mounted to said coupling portion in said second lateral recess; and

a mounting tab, wherein said intermediate layer is attached to said mounting tab.

13. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a distal jaw end;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw to capture tissue of a patient between said first jaw and said second jaw;

a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein; and

a firing member movable toward said distal jaw end during a firing stroke to eject said staples from said staple cartridge, wherein said firing member comprises:

a coupling portion, comprising:

a first cam configured to engage said first jaw;

a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke; and

a body connecting said first cam to said second cam; and

a bar attached to said coupling portion, wherein said bar comprises a cutting edge configured to cut the tissue during said firing stroke, and wherein at least a portion of said bar extends proximally beyond said coupling portion.
