Abstract

A surgical end effector. A first jaw is configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge. A lockout system is supported within the end effector and is biased laterally into lateral retaining engagement with a firing member when the firing member is in a starting position to thereby retain the firing member in the starting position. The lockout system is configured to be laterally biased out of lateral retaining engagement when contacted by a cam assembly of a surgical staple cartridge that is seated within the first jaw and the cam assembly is in the unfired position.

Claims (30)

1. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a first jaw configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge, the surgical staple cartridge operably supporting a cam assembly therein, the cam assembly being axially movable through the surgical staple cartridge to eject surgical staples therefrom when the cam assembly is moved from an unfired position to a fired position;

a firing member comprising a cutting edge configured to cut tissue during a firing stroke, wherein said cutting edge defines a tissue-cutting plane, and wherein said firing member is supported for axial movement along said tissue-cutting plane within the surgical staple cartridge between a starting position proximal to the surgical staple cartridge and an ending position within the staple cartridge upon applications of firing and retraction motions thereto; and

a lockout system supported within said surgical end effector, said lockout system biased laterally toward said tissue-cutting plane into lateral retaining engagement with said firing member when said firing member is in said starting position to thereby retain said firing member in said starting position, said lockout system configured to be laterally biased away from said tissue-cutting plane out of said lateral retaining engagement when contacted by the cam assembly of the surgical staple cartridge that is seated within said first jaw and the cam assembly is in the unfired position,

wherein said lockout system comprises a spring comprising two laterally moving locking portions, wherein said firing member comprises two lateral sides facing laterally outward with respect to said tissue-cutting plane, and wherein each said laterally moving locking portion is configured to be bent away from a said lateral side of said firing member in a lateral direction.

2. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an elongate shaft defining a shaft axis;

an elongate channel operably coupled to said elongate shaft;

a surgical staple cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body configured to be removably seated in said elongate channel; and

a cam assembly supported within said cartridge body and being axially movable therethrough between an unfired position to a fired position and wherein said surgical stapling instrument further comprises:

a firing member comprising a knife edge configured to cut tissue during a firing stroke, wherein said knife edge defines a tissue-cutting plane, and wherein said firing member is supported for axial movement along said tissue-cutting plane within said surgical staple cartridge between a starting position proximal to said surgical staple cartridge and an ending position within said surgical staple cartridge upon applications of firing and retraction motions thereto; and

a lockout system supported within said surgical instrument, said lockout system biased laterally toward said tissue-cutting plane into lateral retaining engagement with said firing member when said firing member is in said starting position to thereby retain said firing member in said starting position, said lockout system configured to be laterally biased away from said tissue-cutting plane out of said lateral retaining engagement when contacted by said cam assembly when said cam assembly is in said unfired position,

wherein said lockout system comprises a spring comprising two laterally moving locking portions, wherein said firing member comprises two lateral sides facing laterally outward with respect to said tissue-cutting plane, and wherein each said laterally moving locking portion is configured to be bent away from a said lateral side of said firing member in a lateral direction.

3. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a first jaw that is configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein;

a firing member comprising a cutting edge configured to cut tissue during a firing stroke, wherein said cutting edge defines a tissue-cutting plane, and wherein said firing member is supported for axial movement along said tissue-cutting plane within the surgical staple cartridge between a starting position that is proximal to the surgical staple cartridge and an ending position within the staple cartridge upon applications of firing and retraction motions thereto; and

means for retaining said firing member in said starting position unless an unfired surgical staple cartridge that has a cam assembly therein that is in an unfired position has been seated within said first jaw such that the cam assembly laterally biases said means for retaining away from said tissue-cutting plane out of retaining engagement with said firing member to thereby permit said firing member to be axially advanced through the surgical staple cartridge upon application of a firing motion to said firing member,

wherein said means for retaining comprises a spring comprising two laterally moving locking portions, wherein said firing member comprises two lateral sides facing laterally outward with respect to said tissue-cutting plane, and wherein each said laterally moving locking portion is configured to be bent away from a said lateral side of said firing member in a lateral direction.

4. A surgical instrument assembly, comprising:

a firing member comprising a cutting edge, wherein said firing member is configured to be actuated through a firing stroke, wherein said firing member is configured to move through a tissue-cutting plane defined by said cutting edge;

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;

a staple cartridge configured to be installed into one of said first jaw or said second jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a camming member actuatable by said firing member between an unfired position and a fired position; and

a plurality of staples configured to be ejected from said staple cartridge by said camming member; and

a lockout movable between:

a locked configuration where said lockout is engaged with said firing member to prevent movement of said firing member, wherein said lockout is biased laterally toward said tissue-cutting plane and said locked configuration; and

an unlocked configuration where said lockout is disengaged from said firing member to permit movement of said firing member, wherein said camming member is configured to move said lockout laterally away from said tissue-cutting plane when said staple cartridge is installed into said one of said first jaw or said second jaw and said camming member is in said unfired position,

wherein said lockout comprises a spring comprising two laterally moving locking portions, wherein said firing member comprises two lateral sides facing laterally outward with respect to said tissue-cutting plane, and wherein each said laterally moving locking portion is configured to be bent away from a said lateral side of said firing member in a lateral direction.
