Abstract

A surgical end effector that includes first and second jaws that are selectively movable between a fully open position and a fully closed position relative to each other. At least one expandable tissue stop is located on one of the first and second jaws and is configured to extend between first and second jaw surfaces on the first and second jaws as the first and second jaws move between the fully open and the fully closed positions.

2. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein each said at least one expandable tissue stop further comprises:

a biasing member for biasing said upper and lower tissue stop portions between a fully compressed orientation corresponding to said fully closed position and a fully expanded orientation corresponding to said fully open position.

3. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises:

an elongate channel; and

a surgical staple cartridge operably supported in said elongate channel and defining said first jaw surface.

4. The surgical end effector of claim 3 , wherein each said expandable tissue stop is operably supported on said surgical staple cartridge.

5. The surgical end effector of claim 3 , wherein said surgical staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body configured to be removably supported in said elongate channel and defining said first jaw surface;

an elongate slot extending through a portion of said cartridge body and said first jaw surface; and

at least one row of discrete staple pockets located on each side of said elongate slot, each said discrete staple pocket operably supporting at least one surgical staple therein and wherein at least a portion of said at least one expandable tissue stop is located distal of a proximal-most said discrete staple pocket in each of said rows of discrete staple pockets.

6. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said at least one expandable tissue stop comprises two expandable tissue stops operably supported adjacent said first proximal jaw end.

7. The surgical end effector of claim 6 , further comprising a fixed tissue stop on said second jaw corresponding to each said expandable tissue stop.

8. The surgical end effector of claim 7 , wherein each said fixed tissue stop is located proximal to said corresponding expandable tissue stop.

9. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a first proximal jaw end and a first jaw surface;

a second jaw comprising a second proximal jaw end and a second jaw surface, said first proximal jaw end and said second proximal jaw end being movably supported relative to each other such that said first jaw surface and said second jaw surface are movable between a fully open position relative to each other and a fully closed position relative to each other wherein tissue may be clamped therebetween; and

at least one expandable tissue stop located on one of said first and second jaws and being configured to extend between said first and second jaw surfaces as said first and second jaws move between said fully open and said fully closed positions, wherein each said at least one expandable tissue stop comprises:

a lower tissue stop portion;

an upper tissue stop portion supported for movable travel relative to said lower tissue stop portion; and

a biasing member for biasing said upper and lower tissue stop portions between a fully compressed orientation corresponding to said fully closed position and a fully expanded orientation corresponding to said fully open position, wherein each said lower tissue stop portion is pivotally coupled to said first jaw and comprises a pair of interconnected cam walls that define a space therebetween and wherein a corresponding one of said upper tissue stop portions is movably supported within said space.

10. The surgical end effector of claim 9 , wherein each said lower tissue stop portion and said upper tissue stop portions are pivotally supported on said first jaw for pivotal travel about a tissue stop axis.

11. The surgical end effector of claim 10 , wherein said first jaw comprises:

an elongate channel; and

a surgical staple cartridge operably supported in said elongate channel and defining said first jaw surface.

12. The surgical end effector of claim 11 , wherein said surgical staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body configured to be removably supported in said elongate channel and defining said first jaw surface;

an elongate slot extending through a portion of said cartridge body and said first jaw surface; and

at least one row of discrete staple pockets located on each side of said elongate slot, each said discrete staple pocket operably supporting at least one surgical staple therein and wherein said at least one expandable tissue stop is located distal of a proximal-most said discrete staple pocket in each of said rows of discrete staple pockets and wherein said tissue stop axis is transverse to said elongate slot.

13. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a surgical staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body defining a cartridge deck surface; and

a pattern of staple pockets in said cartridge body and wherein said surgical end effector further comprises:

an anvil comprising a staple forming undersurface, said anvil and said cartridge body supported relative to each other such that one of said anvil and said cartridge body is selectively movable between a fully open position and a fully closed position relative to the other of said anvil and said cartridge body; and

means for preventing tissue from extending proximally past a proximal most portion of said pattern of staple pockets when tissue is admitted between said cartridge deck surface and said staple forming undersurface, said means for preventing being expandable between a fully collapsed orientation corresponding to said fully closed position and a fully expanded orientation corresponding to said fully open position.

14. The surgical end effector of claim 13 , wherein said cartridge body further comprises:

an elongate slot extending through a portion of said cartridge body and said cartridge deck surface and wherein said pattern of staple pockets comprises at least one row of discrete staple pockets located on each side of said elongate slot, each said discrete staple pocket operably supporting at least one surgical staple therein and wherein said means for preventing is located distal of a proximal-most said discrete staple pocket in each of said rows of discrete staple pockets.

15. The surgical end effector of claim 14 , wherein said means for preventing is movably supported on said cartridge body.

16. The surgical end effector of claim 15 , wherein said means for preventing are pivotally coupled to a proximal end of said cartridge body.
