Abstract

A surgical severing and stapling instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

Claims (40)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw comprising a channel slot, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is movable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw between an open position and a closed position;

a firing member movable relative to said first jaw and said second jaw during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises:

a cutting edge; and

a lower portion configured to pass through said channel slot, wherein said lower portion comprises a laterally-projecting portion configured to engage the bottom of said second jaw; and

a staple cartridge positioned in said second jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a sled configured to be advanced distally by said firing member during said firing stroke;

a cartridge body, comprising:

a longitudinal sled cavity comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

a plurality of staple cavities; and

a longitudinal slot configured to receive said cutting edge of said firing member;

a plurality of staples positioned in said staple cavities;

a plurality of staple drivers supporting said staples, wherein said staple drivers are movable from an unfired position to a fired position by said sled during said firing stroke to fire said staples; and

a lockout comprising a blocking member, wherein said sled permits said firing member to move over said blocking member when said sled is located at the proximal end of said longitudinal sled cavity.

2. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw comprising a channel slot, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is movable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw between an open position and a closed position;

a firing member movable relative to said first jaw and said second jaw during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises:

a cutting edge; and

a lower portion movable within said channel slot, wherein said lower portion comprises a laterally projecting portion configured to engage the bottom of said second jaw;

a staple cartridge positioned in said second jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot configured to receive said firing member; and

a plurality of staple cavities;

a plurality of staples positioned in said staple cavities, wherein each staple is movable between an unfired position and a fired position;

a plurality of staple drivers;

a sled configured to be advanced distally by said firing member during said firing stroke, wherein said sled is configured to move said staples between their unfired positions and their fired positions during said firing stroke; and

a lockout comprising a blocking member, wherein said sled permits said firing member to move over said blocking member when said sled is located at said proximal end of said cartridge body.

A staple cartridge for use with a surgical instrument, wherein the surgical instrument comprises a first jaw, a second jaw including a channel slot, a firing member movable relative to the first jaw and the second jaw during a firing stroke, wherein one of the first jaw and the second jaw is movable relative to the other of the first jaw and the second jaw between an open position and a closed position, wherein the firing member comprises a cutting edge and a lower portion configured to pass through the channel slot, wherein the lower portion comprises a laterally projecting portion configured to engage the bottom of the second jaw, and wherein the staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot configured to receive the cutting edge of the firing member; and

a plurality of staple cavities;

a plurality of staples positioned in said staple cavities, wherein each staple is movable between an unfired position and a fired position;

a plurality of staple drivers; and

a sled configured to be advanced distally by the firing member during the firing stroke, wherein said sled is configured to move said staples between their unfired positions and their fired positions during the firing stroke, wherein the surgical instrument further comprises a lockout comprising a blocking member, wherein said sled permits the firing member to move over the blocking member when said sled is located at said proximal end of said cartridge body.
