Abstract

A forceps includes an end effector assembly including first and second jaw members. One or both of the jaw members is movable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. One or both of the jaw members is configured to conduct energy between the jaw members and through tissue grasped therebetween to treat tissue. An insulative tubular member is movable relative to the end effector assembly between a retracted position, wherein the insulative tubular member is positioned proximally of the end effector assembly, and an extended position, wherein the insulative tubular member is disposed about the end effector assembly. A monopolar member is configured to apply energy to tissue to treat tissue when the insulative tubular member is disposed in the extended position.

Claims (26)

1. A monopolar electrode assembly, comprising:

an electrically-insulative outer tube defining a distal end;

an electrically-conductive inner body fixed relative to and disposed within the electrically-insulative outer tube, the electrically-conductive inner body defining a distal end that is proximally spaced-apart from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube;

a first electrically-conductive distal tip configured to releasably engage the electrically-conductive inner body within the electrically-insulative outer tube such that a distal treating portion of the first electrically-conductive distal tip extends distally from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube, wherein the electrically-conductive inner body is configured as a tube; and

an electrically-insulative inner tube disposed within the electrically-conductive inner body.

The monopolar electrode assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a second electrically-conductive distal tip configured to releasably engage the electrically-conductive inner body within the electrically-insulative outer tube such that a distal treating portion of the second electrically-conductive distal tip extends distally from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube.

3. The monopolar electrode assembly according to claim 2 , wherein the distal treating portion of the second electrically-conductive distal tip and the distal treating portion of the first electrically-conductive distal tip define different configurations.

4. The monopolar electrode assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the distal treating portion of the first electrically-conductive distal tip includes one of a beveled edge, a linear blade, a hook, or an annular edge.

5. The monopolar electrode assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the first electrically-conductive distal tip and the electrically-conductive inner body include complementary threading to enable releasably engagement therebetween.

The monopolar electrode assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the threading of the first electrically-conductive distal tip is disposed on an inwardly-facing surface thereof, and wherein the threading of the electrically-conductive inner body is disposed on an outwardly-facing surface thereof.

7. The monopolar electrode assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the first electrically-conductive distal tip and the electrically-conductive inner body are configured to electrically couple with one another via the engagement of the complementary threading.

8. The monopolar electrode assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the inner electrically-conductive inner body is configured to slidably receive a shaft of a surgical instrument therethrough.

9. A method of assembling a monopolar electrode assembly, comprising:

providing a body portion including an electrically-insulative outer tube defining a distal end and an electrically-conductive inner body fixed relative to and disposed within the electrically-insulative outer tube, the electrically-conductive inner body defining a distal end that is proximally spaced-apart from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube;

selecting an electrically-conductive distal tip; and

releasably engaging the selected electrically-conductive distal tip with the electrically-conductive inner body within the electrically-insulative outer tube such that a distal treating portion of the selected electrically-conductive distal tip extends distally from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube, wherein releasably engaging the selected electrically-conductive distal tip with the electrically-conductive inner body includes threadingly engaging the selected electrically-conductive distal tip with the electrically-conductive inner body.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the selected electrically-conductive distal tip is selected from a plurality of electrically-conductive distal tips each having a different configuration.

11. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the distal treating portion of the selected electrically-conductive distal tip includes one of a beveled edge, a linear blade, a hook, or an annular edge.

12. A monopolar electrode assembly, comprising:

an electrically-insulative outer tube defining a distal end;

an electrically-conductive inner body fixed relative to and disposed within the electrically-insulative outer tube, the electrically-conductive inner body defining a distal end that is proximally spaced-apart from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube;

a first electrically-conductive distal tip configured to releasably engage the electrically-conductive inner body within the electrically-insulative outer tube such that a distal treating portion of the first electrically-conductive distal tip extends distally from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube, wherein the first electrically-conductive distal tip and the electrically-conductive inner body include complementary threading to enable releasably engagement therebetween.

13. A monopolar electrode assembly, comprising:

an electrically-insulative outer tube defining a distal end;

an electrically-conductive inner body fixed relative to and disposed within the electrically-insulative outer tube, the electrically-conductive inner body defining a distal end that is proximally spaced-apart from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube;

a first electrically-conductive distal tip configured to releasably engage the electrically-conductive inner body within the electrically-insulative outer tube such that a distal treating portion of the first electrically-conductive distal tip extends distally from the distal end of the electrically-insulative outer tube, wherein the inner electrically-conductive inner body is configured to slidably receive a shaft of a surgical instrument therethrough.
