Abstract

A surgical instrument can comprise a handle, a motor, and a shaft extending from the handle. The handle and/or the shaft can define a longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument can further comprise a fastener cartridge comprising a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein, an anvil configured to deform the fasteners, a closure drive configured to move the anvil toward and away from the fastener cartridge which is rotatable about the longitudinal axis, and a firing drive configured to deploy the fasteners from the fastener cartridge which is rotatable about the longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument can further comprise a transmission comprising a first operating configuration which connects the motor to the closure drive and a second operating configuration which connects the motor to the firing drive.

Claims (43)

1. A powered surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position; and

a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein;

a rotary closure drive configured to transmit a closure motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw toward said closed position when said rotary closure drive is rotated in a first direction;

a rotary firing drive configured to transmit a firing motion to said end effector to eject said staples from said staple cartridge;

a motor system configured to output rotary motions, wherein said rotary closure drive and said rotary firing drive are operably responsive to said rotary motions of said motor system, and wherein said rotary closure drive and said rotary firing drive are operable independently of one another by said motor system; and

means for preventing said rotary closure drive from rotating in a second direction opposite said first direction when said rotary firing drive is rotated by said motor system.

2. The powered surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said means for preventing comprises a locking member, and wherein said locking member is configured to operably engage said rotary closure drive to prevent said rotary closure drive from rotating in said second direction when said rotary firing drive is rotated by said motor system.

3. The powered surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said motor system comprises a first motor, and wherein said means for preventing comprises a second motor operably engaged with said rotary closure drive such that said second motor rotates said rotary closure drive in said first direction when said rotary firing drive is rotated by said first motor.

4. The powered surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein said end effector comprises an anvil, wherein a predetermined tissue gap is defined between said staple cartridge and said anvil when said second jaw is in said closed position, and wherein said rotary closure drive is configured to transmit said closure motion to said second jaw to maintain said predetermined tissue gap when said second motor is actuated.

5. The powered surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a firing member configured to move through said end effector in response to said firing motion to eject said staples from said staple cartridge.

6. The powered surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein said firing member comprises a knife.

7. A powered surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position; and

a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein;

a rotary closure drive configured to transmit a closure motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw toward said closed position;

a firing member configured to move relative to said end effector;

a rotary firing drive configured to transmit a firing motion to said firing member to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a firing stroke;

a first motor operably engaged with said rotary closure drive;

a second motor operably engaged with said rotary firing drive; and

a control system in signal communication with said first motor and said second motor, wherein said control system is configured to operate said first motor and said second motor in a plurality of operating modes, and wherein said plurality of operating modes comprises:

a first operating mode where said first motor is configured to rotate said rotary closure drive and said second motor is not actuated; and

a second operating mode where said second motor is configured to rotate said rotary firing drive to perform said firing stroke and said first motor is configured to actuate said rotary closure drive to prevent said rotary closure drive from being back driven.

8. The powered surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said end effector comprises an anvil, wherein a predetermined tissue gap is defined between said staple cartridge and said anvil when said second jaw is in said closed position, and wherein said rotary closure drive is configured to transmit said closure motion to said second jaw to maintain said predetermined tissue gap when said first motor and said second motor are in said second operating mode.

9. The powered surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said firing member comprises a knife.

10. A powered surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position;

a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein; and

an anvil;

a closure driver configured to translate in a distal direction in response to a closure motion, wherein said closure drive is further configured to translate in a proximal direction in response to an opening motion;

a firing member configured to move relative to said end effector;

a firing driver configured to transmit a firing motion to said firing member to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a firing stroke;

a first motor operably engaged with said firing driver, wherein said first motor is configured to actuate said firing driver to perform said firing stroke;

a second motor operably engaged with said closure driver; and

a control system in signal communication with said first motor and said second motor, wherein said control system is configured to actuate said second motor to prevent said closure driver from translating proximally when said first motor is actuated to perform said firing stroke.

11. The powered surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein a predetermined tissue gap is defined between said staple cartridge and said anvil when said second jaw is in said closed position, and wherein said control system is configured to actuate said second motor to maintain said predetermined tissue gap when said first motor is actuated to perform said firing stroke.

12. The powered surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said firing member comprises a knife.
