a second flange comprising a second proximal edge;

a first jaw configured to be engaged by said first flange;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw configured to be engaged by said second flange;

a staple cartridge;

a cartridge channel configured to receive said staple cartridge therein;

an internal lockout movable between an unlocked configuration and a locked configuration, wherein said internal lockout is configured to prevent said firing member from advancing distally from said unfired location when an unspent staple cartridge is not positioned within said cartridge channel, wherein said internal lockout comprises a lockout member pivotably supported within said surgical stapling assembly, wherein said lockout member comprises a proximal leg configured to engage said notch, and wherein said notch is proximal to said knife, said first proximal edge of said first flange, and said second proximal edge of said second flange;

an exterior access orifice defined in said cartridge channel, wherein said internal lockout is accessible through said exterior access orifice; and

a lockout key member insertable through said exterior access orifice, wherein said lockout key member is configured to artificially defeat said internal lockout to move said internal lockout into said unlocked configuration.

9. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 8 , wherein said lockout member is pivotable between an unlocked configuration where said firing member is permitted to advance distally beyond said unfired location and a locked configuration where said firing member is prevented from moving distally beyond said unfired location.

10. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 8 , wherein said lockout member is spring-biased toward a locked position.
