Abstract

A surgical system is disclosed that comprises a stapling instrument including a staple firing lockout and a staple cartridge configured to defeat the staple firing lockout when the staple cartridge is seated in the stapling instrument.

Claims (83)

1. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:

an unspent staple cartridge, comprising:

a lockout key;

a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot;

staples removably stored within said cartridge body; and

a sled configured to eject said staples from said cartridge body during a staple firing stroke; and

a surgical instrument configured to receive said unspent staple cartridge therein, wherein said surgical instrument comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;

a firing member movable within said longitudinal slot to push said sled through said staple firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises a lockout pin extending laterally therefrom;

a first lockout comprising a spring member and a locking aperture defined in said spring member, wherein said locking aperture is configured to capture said lockout pin and hold said firing member in position to prevent said firing member from being advanced through said staple firing stroke when an improper staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument instead of said unspent staple cartridge; and

a second lockout configured to prevent said firing member from being advanced through said staple firing stroke when a spent staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument, wherein said lockout key is configured to defeat said second lockout when said unspent staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument by disengaging said locking aperture from said lockout pin to permit said firing member to be advanced distally through said staple firing stroke.

2. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said lockout key is positioned on only one lateral side of said longitudinal slot.

3. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said lockout key extends proximally from said cartridge body.

4. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said unspent staple cartridge further comprises a pan configured to hold said staples within said cartridge body, and wherein said lockout key extends proximally from said pan.

5. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 4 , wherein said lockout key comprises:

a looped end; and

a slot defined in said looped end such that said loop end terminates in said slot to reinforce said lockout key.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said lockout pin comprises a first lockout pin, wherein said first lockout pin is positioned on a first lateral side of said firing member, wherein said firing member further comprises a second lockout pin positioned on a second lateral side of said firing member, wherein said spring member comprises a first spring member extending along said first lateral side, wherein said second lockout further comprises a second spring member extending along said second lateral side, and wherein said second spring member is configured to releasably lock said second lockout pin in position when an improper staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument instead of said unspent staple cartridge.

7. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises a channel configured to receive said unspent staple cartridge, and wherein said spring member is grounded within said channel.

8. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said sled is configured to aid said lockout key in defeating said first lockout when said unspent staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument and said sled is in an unfired position.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said spring member comprises a first portion mounted to said surgical instrument and a second portion pivotably attached to said first portion, and wherein said second portion is configured to be pivoted out of engagement with said lockout pin by said lockout key.

10. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said spring member comprises a metal bar that is pulled in tension to stop said firing member when said first lockout is engaged with said firing member and said staple firing stroke is initiated.

11. A surgical stapling assembly configured to receive a staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises a lockout key, a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot, a plurality of staples removably stored within the cartridge body, and a sled configured to fire the staples from the cartridge body during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said surgical stapling assembly comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;

a firing member movable within the longitudinal slot during the staple firing stroke, wherein said firing member is configured to push the sled to fire the staples during the staple firing stroke, and wherein said firing member comprises a pin extending therefrom;

a first lockout configured to prevent said firing member from advancing through the staple firing stroke when a spent staple cartridge is seated in said surgical stapling assembly; and

a second lockout configured to prevent said firing member from advancing through the staple firing stroke when the staple cartridge is not seated in said surgical stapling assembly, wherein said second lockout comprises a lockout arm and a locking aperture defined in said lockout arm configured to receive said pin, wherein said lockout arm is configured to hold said pin to lock said firing member in position, and wherein the lockout key is configured to defeat said second lockout by engaging said lockout arm and disengaging said lockout arm from said pin to permit said firing member to be advanced distally through the staple firing stroke when said staple cartridge is seated in said surgical stapling assembly.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein said pin comprises a first pin, wherein said first pin is positioned on a first lateral side of said firing member, wherein said firing member further comprises a second pin positioned on a second lateral side of said firing member, wherein said lockout arm comprises a first lockout arm extending along said first lateral side, wherein said second lockout further comprises a second lockout arm extending along said second lateral side, and wherein said second lockout arm is configured to lock said second pin in position when the staple cartridge is not seated in said surgical stapling assembly.

13. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein said first jaw comprises a channel configured to receive the staple cartridge, and wherein said lockout arm is grounded within said channel.

14. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein said lockout arm comprises a first portion and a second portion pivotably attached to said first portion, wherein said second portion is configured to be pivoted out of engagement with said pin by the lockout key.

15. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 11 , wherein said lockout arm comprises a metal bar that is pulled in tension to stop said firing member when said second lockout is engaged with said firing member and said staple firing stroke is initiated.

16. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a lockout key;

a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot;

staples removably stored within said cartridge body; and

a sled configured to eject said staples from said cartridge body during a staple firing stroke; and

a surgical instrument configured to receive said staple cartridge therein, wherein said surgical instrument comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;

a firing member movable within said longitudinal slot to push said sled through said staple firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises a lockout pin extending laterally therefrom;

a first lockout comprising a spring member and a locking aperture defined in said spring member, wherein said locking aperture is configured to capture said lockout pin and hold said firing member in position to prevent said firing member from being advanced through said staple firing stroke when said staple cartridge is not seated in said surgical instrument; and

a second lockout configured to prevent said firing member from being advanced through said staple firing stroke when a spent staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument, wherein said lockout key is configured to actively unlock said second lockout when said staple cartridge is seated in said surgical instrument by disengaging said locking aperture from said lockout pin to permit said firing member to be advanced distally through said staple firing stroke.

17. A surgical system, comprising:

a first staple cartridge, comprising:

a first cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said first cartridge body; and

a first lockout key;

a first stapling instrument, comprising:

a first staple firing drive comprising a first firing member, wherein said first firing member is movable through a first staple firing stroke; and

a first lockout configured to prevent said first firing member from being moved through said first staple firing stroke when said first staple cartridge is not seated in said first stapling instrument, wherein said first lockout key is configured to unlock said first lockout when said first staple cartridge is seated in said first stapling instrument such that said first firing member is advanceable through said first staple firing stroke;

a second staple cartridge, comprising:

a second cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said second cartridge body; and

a second lockout key, wherein said second lockout key is different than said first lockout key; and

a second stapling instrument, comprising:

a second staple firing drive comprising a second firing member, wherein said second firing member is movable through a second staple firing stroke; and

a second lockout configured to prevent said second firing member from being moved through said second staple firing stroke when said second staple cartridge is not seated in said second stapling instrument, wherein said second lockout key is configured to unlock said second lockout when said second staple cartridge is seated in said second stapling instrument such that said second firing member is advanceable through said second staple firing stroke,

wherein seating said first staple cartridge in said second stapling instrument does not unlock said second lockout, and wherein seating said second staple cartridge in said first stapling instrument does not unlock said first lockout.

The surgical system of claim 17 , wherein said first firing member and said second firing member each comprise a left lateral side and a right lateral side, wherein said first lockout extends along said left lateral side of said first firing member but does not extend along said right lateral side of said first firing member, and wherein said second lockout extends along said right lateral side of said second firing member but does not extend along said left lateral side of said second firing member.

The surgical system of claim 18 , wherein said first stapling instrument includes a first frame, wherein said first lockout comprises a first cantilever lock arm mounted to said first frame, wherein said second stapling instrument includes a second frame, and wherein said second lockout comprises a second cantilever lock arm mounted to said second frame.

20. A system of stapling cartridges, comprising:

a first staple cartridge configured to apply rows of staples in patient tissue having a staple length, wherein said first staple cartridge is configured to be used with a first stapling instrument having a first staple firing lockout, and wherein said first staple cartridge unlocks the first staple firing lockout when said first staple cartridge is seated in the first stapling instrument; and

a second staple cartridge configured to apply rows of staples in patient tissue having said staple length, wherein said second staple cartridge is configured to be used with a second stapling instrument having a second staple firing lockout, wherein said second staple cartridge unlocks the second staple firing lockout when said second staple cartridge is seated in the second stapling instrument,

wherein said first staple cartridge is seatable in said second stapling instrument, wherein said first staple cartridge does not unlock said second staple firing lockout when said first staple cartridge is seated in said second stapling instrument, wherein said second staple cartridge is seatable in said first stapling instrument, and wherein said second staple cartridge does not unlock said first staple firing lockout when said second staple cartridge is seated in said first stapling instrument.

The system of staple cartridges of claim 20 , wherein said first staple cartridge comprises a first cartridge body having a color, wherein said second staple cartridge comprises a second cartridge body having said color, wherein said first staple cartridge comprises staples having an unfired height, and wherein said second staple cartridge comprises staples having said unfired height.

22. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:

an unspent staple cartridge, comprising:

a lockout key;

a cartridge body comprising a longitudinal slot;

staples removably stored within said cartridge body; and

a sled configured to eject said staples from said cartridge body during a staple firing stroke; and

a surgical instrument configured to receive said unspent staple cartridge therein, wherein said surgical instrument comprises:

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;

a firing member movable within said longitudinal slot to push said sled through said staple firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises:

a lockout pin extending laterally from the firing member; and

a distal cutting edge configured to cut tissue during said staple firing stroke;

a first lockout comprising a spring member and a locking aperture defined in said spring member, wherein said spring member is biased laterally toward said firing member, and wherein said lockout pin is configured to be received within said locking aperture to prevent said firing member from being advanced through said staple firing stroke when an improper staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument instead of said unspent staple cartridge; and

a second lockout configured to prevent said firing member from being advanced through said staple firing stroke when a spent staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument, wherein said lockout key is configured to defeat said second lockout when said unspent staple cartridge is positioned in said surgical instrument to permit said firing member to be advanced distally through said staple firing stroke.
