Abstract

A surgical instrument comprising a housing, an elongate shaft, a stapling attachment, a motor-driven system, and a control system is disclosed. The stapling attachment comprises a first jaw, a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw from an open position toward a closed position to capture patient tissue, and a staple cartridge comprising staples. The motor-driven system comprises a drive member configured to eject the staples from the staple cartridge during a firing stroke. The drive member comprises a first portion configured to engage the first jaw and a second portion configured to engage the second jaw during the firing stroke. The control system is configured to prevent the drive member from performing the firing stroke when a thickness of tissue captured exceeds a threshold thickness and prevent the drive member from performing the firing stroke when a current draw of the motor-driven system exceeds a threshold value.

Claims (50)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

an elongate shaft extending from said housing;

a stapling attachment releasably attachable to said elongate shaft, wherein said stapling attachment comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position to capture patient tissue therebetween; and

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw between said open position and said closed position;

a drive member movable relative to said stapling attachment and configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein said drive member comprises a first portion configured to engage said first jaw and a second portion configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke,

a motor supported by said housing, wherein said motor comprises a rotary element operably interfacing with said drive member to selectively move said drive member through said firing stroke;

a power source configured to supply power to said motor;

a tissue thickness sensor configured to sense a thickness of tissue captured between said first jaw and said second jaw;

a current sensor configured to measure a current draw of said motor; and

a control system in signal communication with said tissue thickness sensor, said current sensor, and said motor, wherein said control system is configured to:

prevent said drive member from performing said firing stroke when the sensed thickness of tissue exceeds a threshold thickness; and

prevent said drive member from performing said firing stroke when the current draw of said motor exceeds a threshold value.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a manual bailout configured to permit a user of the surgical instrument to manually retract said drive member.

4. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

an elongate shaft extending from said housing;

a stapling attachment releasably attachable to said elongate shaft, wherein said stapling attachment comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position to capture patient tissue therebetween; and

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw between said open position and said closed position;

a drive member movable relative to said stapling attachment and configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein said drive member comprises a first portion configured to engage said first jaw and a second portion configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke,

a motor comprising a rotary element operably interfacing with said drive member to selectively move said drive member through said firing stroke;

a power source configured to supply power to said motor; and

a control circuit, comprising:

a tissue thickness sensor configured to measure a thickness of tissue captured between said first jaw and said second jaw;

a current sensor configured to measure a current draw of said motor; and

a motor controller in signal communication with said motor, wherein said control circuit is configured to:

prevent said drive member from performing said firing stroke when the measured tissue thickness exceeds a threshold thickness; and

prevent said drive member from performing said firing stroke when the measured current draw exceeds a threshold value.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein the staple cartridge is replaceable.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , further comprising a manual bailout configured to permit a user of the surgical instrument to manually retract said drive member.

7. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

an elongate shaft extending from said housing;

a stapling attachment releasably attachable to said elongate shaft, wherein said stapling attachment comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw from an open position toward a closed position to capture patient tissue therebetween in response to a closure motion; and

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

a motor-driven system comprising a drive member movable relative to said stapling attachment and configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein said drive member comprises a first portion configured to engage said first jaw and a second portion configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke; and

a control system configured to:

prevent said drive member from performing said firing stroke when a thickness of tissue captured between said first jaw and said second jaw exceeds a threshold thickness; and

prevent said drive member from performing said firing stroke when a current draw of said motor-driven system exceeds a threshold value.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , further comprising a manual bailout configured to permit a user of the surgical instrument to manually retract said drive member.
