Abstract

The disclosure herein relates to systems, methods, and devices for medical image analysis, diagnosis, risk stratification, decision making and/or disease tracking. In some embodiments, the systems, devices, and methods described herein are configured to analyze non-invasive medical images of a subject to automatically and/or dynamically identify one or more features, such as plaque and vessels, and/or derive one or more quantified plaque parameters, such as radiodensity, radiodensity composition, volume, radiodensity heterogeneity, geometry, location, and/or the like. In some embodiments, the systems, devices, and methods described herein are further configured to generate one or more assessments of plaque-based diseases from raw medical images using one or more of the identified features and/or quantified parameters.

Claims (29)

1. A normalization device configured to facilitate normalization of a medical image for an algorithm-based medical imaging analysis, the normalization device comprising:

a plurality of compartments each configured to hold a sample of a known material, wherein a subset of the plurality of compartments holds samples of materials representative of materials to be analyzed by the algorithm-based medical imaging analysis, the samples of materials representative of materials to be analyzed by the algorithm-based medical imaging analysis comprising at least two samples having different densities,

wherein a first compartment of the plurality of compartments is positioned adjacent to a second compartment of the plurality of compartments such that a first sample held in the first compartment is juxtaposed with a second sample held in the second compartment,

wherein one or more of the plurality of compartments holds one or more samples of a phantom material, and wherein at least one of the one or more samples of the phantom material comprises calcium.

2. The normalization of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the plurality of compartments holds one or more samples of a contrast material.

3. The normalization device of claim 2 , wherein the contrast material comprises one or more of iodine, Gadolinium, Tantalum, Tungsten, Gold, Bismuth, or Ytterbium.

4. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the samples of materials representative of materials to be analyzed comprise at least a sample of calcium having a specific density.

5. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the normalization device is configured to be imaged simultaneously with a patient image acquisition.

6. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the normalization device is configured to be imaged before or after a patient image acquisition.

7. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the normalization device is configured to be positioned alongside a patient.

The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the medical image is obtained using a computed tomography (CT) scanner, dual source scanner, single source scanner, dual energy scanner, monochromatic energy scanner, spectral CT scanner, photon counting scanner, x-ray, ultrasound, echocardiography, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), magnetic resonance (MR), optical coherence tomography (OCT), nuclear medicine imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), or nearfield infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

9. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the normalization device is configured to be positioned in a medical scanner.

10. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the first compartment is positioned immediately adjacent to the second compartment.

11. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein each sample of the known material comprises a known volume and a known density.

12. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the normalization device is configured to be positioned within a medical scanner.

13. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the normalization device is configured to be positioned in an imaging field of view during acquisition of the medical image.

14. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the normalization device is configured to be positioned outside of an imaging field of view during acquisition of the medical image.

The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein the samples of materials representative of materials to be analyzed by the algorithm-based medical imaging analysis comprises one or more samples having a radiodensity of about 1000 Hounsfield units, about 220 Hounsfield units, about 150 Hounsfield units, about 130 Hounsfield units, or about 30 Hounsfield units.

16. A computer-implemented method for normalizing a medical image for an algorithm-based medical imaging analysis using the normalization device of claim 1 , wherein normalization of the medical images improves accuracy of the algorithm-based medical imaging analysis, the method comprising:

accessing, by a computer system, a medical image of a coronary region of a subject and the normalization device, wherein the medical image is obtained non-invasively;

identifying, by the computer system, one or more image parameters of the normalization device within the medical image;

generating a normalized medical image for the algorithm-based medical imaging analysis based at least in part on the identified image parameters of the normalization device within the medical image;

wherein the computer system comprises a computer processor and an electronic storage medium.

The computer-implemented method of claim 16 , wherein the algorithm-based medical imaging analysis comprises an artificial intelligence or machine learning imaging analysis algorithm, and wherein the artificial intelligence or machine learning imaging analysis algorithm was trained using images that included one or more samples of the normalization device.

18. A computer-implemented method of quantifying coronary plaque using the computer-implemented method for normalizing medical images of claim 16 , the method comprising:

accessing, by the computer system, the normalized medical image;

identifying, by the computer system, one or more regions of plaque within the normalized medical image; and

determining, by the computer system, one or more quantified plaque parameters of the one or more identified regions of plaque, wherein the set of quantified plaque parameters comprises one or more of a ratio or function of volume to surface area, heterogeneity index, geometry, or radiodensity.

19. The normalization device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more samples of the phantom material comprises one or more of fat, calcium, uric acid, air, iron, or blood.
