Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads, golf clubs, and methods to manufacture golf club heads and golf clubs are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head includes a body portion being hollow to define an interior cavity, a filler material in the interior cavity, a face portion, and a back portion having a back wall portion. The back wall portion includes a first external ledge portion and a second external ledge portion, and a perimeter groove below the external ledge portion. The golf club head also includes a removable mass portion coupled to the back wall portion. The face portion includes a back surface with a perimeter portion, a face recess portion and a back groove portion in the face recess portion. The filler material is coupled to the face recess portion and the back groove portion. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Claims (102)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a hollow body portion defining an interior cavity, the hollow body portion comprising:

a front portion;

a toe portion having a toe portion edge;

a heel portion having a heel portion edge and a hosel portion;

a back portion having a back wall portion, the back wall portion comprising an external ledge portion having a first external ledge portion extending from the toe portion edge toward the heel portion edge, and a second external ledge portion extending from the heel portion edge toward the toe portion edge;

a top portion having a top portion edge;

a sole portion having a sole portion edge;

a perimeter groove below the external ledge portion and comprising a first portion extending on the toe portion edge, a second portion extending on the sole portion edge, a third portion extending on the heel portion edge and a fourth portion extending on the back wall portion;

a first back wall groove on the back wall portion extending from the second portion of the perimeter groove to the fourth portion of the perimeter groove, a distance between the first back wall groove and the toe portion edge being less than a distance between the first back wall groove and the heel portion edge;

a second back wall groove on the back wall portion extending from the second portion of the perimeter groove to the fourth portion of the perimeter groove, a distance between the second back wall groove and the heel portion edge being less than a distance between the second back wall groove and the toe portion edge;

a face portion coupled to a front portion of the hollow body portion to enclose the interior cavity, the face portion comprising:

a front surface configured to strike a golf ball;

a back surface opposite the front surface;

a perimeter portion having a first face portion thickness;

a face recess portion on the back surface having a face recess portion depth, a second face portion thickness defined by a difference between the first face portion thickness and the face recess portion depth; and

a back groove portion in the face recess portion having a back groove portion depth, a third face portion thickness defined by a difference between the second face portion thickness and the back groove portion depth; and

a filler material in the interior cavity coupled to the face recess portion and the back groove portion,

wherein the face portion is between the hosel portion and the back wall portion in a front-to-back direction;

wherein the first face portion thickness is greater than or equal 0.025 inch (0.635 mm) and less than or equal to 0.125 inch (3.175 mm),

wherein the face recess portion depth is greater than or equal to 0.007 inch (0.183 mm) and less than or equal to 0.024 inch (0.610 mm), and

wherein the back groove portion depth is greater than or equal to 0.003 inch (0.076 mm) and less than or equal to 0.015 inch (0.381 mm).

2. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face recess portion depth is greater than the back groove portion depth.

3. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the back groove portion depth is greater than the face recess portion depth.

4. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a body portion region bounded by the perimeter groove and the first back wall groove, the body portion region comprising a material having a different density than a material of another portion of the hollow body portion.

5. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a body portion region bounded by the perimeter groove and the second back wall groove, the body portion region comprising a material having a different density than a material of another portion of the hollow body portion.

A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a body portion region bounded by the perimeter groove, the first back wall groove, and the second back wall groove, the body portion region comprising a material having a different density than a material of another portion of the hollow body portion.

7. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a removable mass portion on the back wall portion below the external ledge portion, wherein the first external ledge portion and the second external ledge portion join above the removable mass portion.

8. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion comprising:

an interior cavity;

a front portion;

a toe portion having a toe portion edge;

a heel portion having a heel portion edge and a hosel portion;

a top portion having a top portion edge;

a sole portion having a sole portion edge;

a back portion having a back wall portion, the back wall portion comprising an external ledge portion having a first external ledge portion extending from the toe portion edge toward the heel portion edge, and a second external ledge portion extending from the heel portion edge toward the toe portion edge, a distance between the first external ledge portion and the sole portion edge increasing in a toe-to-heel direction, and a distance between the second external ledge portion and the sole portion edge increasing in a heel-to-toe direction;

a perimeter groove below the external ledge portion and comprising a first portion extending on the toe portion edge, a second portion extending on the sole portion edge, a third portion extending on the heel portion edge and a fourth portion extending on the back wall portion;

a removable mass portion coupled to the back wall portion, the removable mass portion comprising a material having a greater density than a density of a material of the body portion;

a face portion coupled to a front portion of the body portion to close the interior cavity, the face portion comprising:

a front surface configured to strike a golf ball;

a back surface opposite the front surface;

a perimeter portion having a first face portion thickness;

a face recess portion on the back surface having a face recess portion depth, a second face portion thickness defined by a difference between the first face portion thickness and the face recess portion depth; and

a back groove portion in the face recess portion having a back groove portion depth, a third face portion thickness defined by a difference between the second face portion thickness and the back groove portion depth; and

a filler material in the interior cavity coupled to the face recess portion and the back groove portion,

wherein the face portion is between the hosel portion and the back wall portion in a front-to-back direction;

wherein the first external ledge portion and the second external ledge portion join above the removable mass portion;

wherein the first face portion thickness is greater than or equal 0.025 inch (0.635 mm) and less than or equal to 0.125 inch (3.175 mm),

wherein the face recess portion depth is greater than or equal to 0.007 inch (0.183 mm) and less than or equal to 0.024 inch (0.610 mm), and

wherein the back groove portion depth is greater than or equal to 0.003 inch (0.076 mm) and less than or equal to 0.015 inch (0.381 mm).

9. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a back wall groove on the back wall portion extending from the second portion of the perimeter groove to the fourth portion of the perimeter groove, wherein a distance between the back wall groove and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the back wall groove and the heel portion edge.

10. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a back wall groove on the back wall portion extending from the second portion of the perimeter groove to the fourth portion of the perimeter groove, wherein a distance between the back wall groove and the heel portion edge is less than a distance between the back wall groove and the toe portion edge.

11. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising:

a first back wall groove on the back wall portion extending from the second portion of the perimeter groove to the fourth portion of the perimeter groove; and

a second back wall groove on the back wall portion extending from the second portion of the perimeter groove to the fourth portion of the perimeter groove,

wherein a distance between the first back wall groove and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the first back wall groove and the heel portion edge,

wherein a distance between the second back wall groove and the heel portion edge is less than a distance between the second back wall groove and the toe portion edge, and

wherein the removable mass portion is between the first back wall groove and the second back wall groove.

A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a back wall groove on the back wall portion extending from the second portion of the perimeter groove to the fourth portion of the perimeter groove, wherein a body portion region bounded by the perimeter groove and the back wall groove is visually distinguishable from other portions of the back wall portion.

A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a second mass portion coupled to the back wall portion below the external ledge portion and between the removable mass portion and the toe portion edge, wherein a maximum width of the interior cavity is below the external ledge portion and between the removable mass portion and the second mass portion.

A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , further comprising a first plurality of mass portions coupled to the body portion below the external ledge portion and between the removable mass portion and the toe portion edge, and a second plurality of mass portions coupled to the body portion below the external ledge portion and between the removable mass portion and the heel portion edge, wherein mass portions of the first plurality of mass portions have smaller diameters than a diameter of the removable mass portion, and wherein mass portions of the second plurality of mass portions have smaller diameters than the diameter of the removable mass portion.

15. A golf club comprising:

a shaft having a first end portion and a second end portion;

a grip coupled to the first end portion of the shaft;

a golf club head coupled to the second end portion of the shaft, the golf club head comprising:

a hollow body portion defining an interior cavity, the hollow body portion comprising:

a front portion;

a toe portion having a toe portion edge;

a heel portion having a heel portion edge and a hosel portion;

a top portion having a top portion edge;

a sole portion having a sole portion edge;

a back portion having a back wall portion, the back wall portion comprising an external ledge portion having a first external ledge portion extending from the toe portion edge toward the heel portion edge, and a second external ledge portion extending from the heel portion edge toward the toe portion edge, a distance between the first external ledge portion and the sole portion edge increasing in a toe-to-heel direction, and a distance between the second external ledge portion and the sole portion edge increasing in a heel-to-toe direction; and

a perimeter groove below the external ledge portion and comprising a first portion extending on the toe portion edge, a second portion extending on the sole portion edge, a third portion extending on the heel portion edge and a fourth portion extending on the back wall portion;

a removable mass portion coupled to the back wall portion, the removable mass portion comprising a material having a greater density than a density of a material of the hollow body portion;

a face portion coupled to a front portion of the hollow body portion to enclose the interior cavity, the face portion comprising:

a front surface configured to strike a golf ball;

a back surface opposite the front surface;

a perimeter portion having a first face portion thickness;

a face recess portion on the back surface having a face recess portion depth, a second face portion thickness defined by a difference between the first face portion thickness and the face recess portion depth; and

a back groove portion in the face recess portion having a back groove portion depth, a third face portion thickness defined by a difference between the second face portion thickness and the back groove portion depth; and

a filler material in the interior cavity coupled to the face recess portion and the back groove portion,

wherein the face portion is between the hosel portion and the back wall portion in a front-to-back direction;

wherein the first external ledge portion and the second external ledge portion join above the removable mass portion;

wherein the first face portion thickness is greater than or equal 0.025 inch (0.635 mm) and less than or equal to 0.125 inch (3.175 mm),

wherein the face recess portion depth is greater than or equal to 0.007 inch (0.183 mm) and less than or equal to 0.024 inch (0.610 mm), and

wherein the back groove portion depth is greater than or equal to 0.003 inch (0.076 mm) and less than or equal to 0.015 inch (0.381 mm).

16. A golf club as defined in claim 15 , wherein the face recess portion depth is greater than the back groove portion depth.

17. A golf club as defined in claim 15 , wherein the back groove portion depth is greater than the face recess portion depth.

18. A golf club as defined in claim 15 further comprising a mass portion on the back wall portion below the external ledge portion, wherein the first external ledge portion and the second external ledge portion join above the mass portion.

19. A golf club as defined in claim 15 further comprising:

a first mass portion on the back wall portion below the external ledge portion; and

a second mass portion coupled to the back wall portion below the external ledge portion and between the first mass portion and the toe portion edge,

wherein a maximum width of the interior cavity is below the external ledge portion and between the first mass portion and the second mass portion.

20. A golf club as defined in claim 15 , further comprising:

a first mass portion on the back wall portion below the external ledge portion;

a first plurality of mass portions coupled to the hollow body portion below the external ledge portion and between the first mass portion and the toe portion edge; and

a second plurality of mass portions coupled to the hollow body portion below the external ledge portion and between the first mass portion and the heel portion edge,

wherein mass portions of the first plurality of mass portions have smaller diameters than a diameter of the first mass portion,

wherein mass portions of the second plurality of mass portions have smaller diameters than the diameter of the first mass portion,

wherein the first external ledge portion and the second external ledge portion join above the first mass portion, and

wherein a maximum width of the interior cavity is below the external ledge portion and between the first mass portion and the first plurality of mass portions.
