Abstract

Matrix compositions suitable for topical administration comprising structurally diverse matrix particles formed from at least three different types of primary particle populations where (1) the first primary particle population has an average particle size from 1000 nm to 8500 nm, makes up 4-9% of the composition by weight, and 20-70% of the first primary particle population comprises a glass composition, (2) the second particle population has an average particle size from 250 nm to 500 nm, makes up 5-15% of the composition by weight and comprises UV-protective particles, and (3) the third particle population has an average particle size from 500 nm to 1000 nm, makes up 6.75-22% of the composition by weight, and at least 75% of the third particle population comprises UV-protective metal oxide particles, and the composition exhibits one or more of sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm, UVA/UVB ratio of at least 0.333, and a UVA1 to UV ratio of at least 0.7.

Claims (19)

1. A composition suitable for topical administration comprising a matrix composition of a mixture of structurally diverse matrix particles that are formed from at least three different types of primary particles comprising (a) a first primary particle population, (b) a second primary particle population, and (c) a third primary particle population, wherein (i) the first primary particle population has an average particle size from 1000 nm to 8500 nm, makes up 4-9% of the composition by weight, and 20-70% of the first primary particle population comprises a glass composition, (ii) the second particle population has an average particle size from 250 nm to 500 nm, makes up 5-15% of the composition by weight and comprises UV-protective particles, (iii) the third particle population has an average particle size from 500 nm to 1000 nm, makes up 6.75-22% of the composition by weight, and at least 75% of the third particle population comprises UV-protective metal oxide particles, and (iv) the composition exhibits a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm, a UVA/UVB ratio of at least 0.333, and a UVA1 to UV ratio of at least 0.7.

2. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the glass composition comprises a borosilicate component.

3. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein the borosilicate component comprises non-porous, spherical particles.

4. The composition according to claim 3 , wherein a salt of the borosilicate component comprises calcium or sodium.

5. The composition according to claim 4 , wherein the UV-protective particles are mostly composed of a styrene acrylate copolymer.

6. The composition according to claim 5 , wherein the third particle population comprising at least 75% UV-protective metal oxide particles consist of particles having an average particle size (a) from 500 nm to less than 750 nm making up 5%-15% of the composition by weight and (b) from 750 nm to 1000 nm and making up 1.75%-7% of the composition by weight.

7. The composition according to claim 6 , wherein the UV-protective metal oxide particles mostly comprise mesoporous metal oxide particles.

8. The composition according to claim 7 , wherein the mesoporous metal oxide particles comprise pores with a maximum dimension of about 2 nm to about 100 nm.

9. The composition according to claim 7 , wherein at least 80% by weight of the mesoporous metal oxide particles comprise mesoporous zinc oxide particles.

10. The composition according to claim 9 , wherein the mesoporous zinc oxide particles comprise aggregates of greater than one of the mesoporous zinc oxide particles.

11. The composition according to claim 10 , wherein the composition comprises a fourth particle population having a maximum particle size of 250 nm and makes up less than 2% of the composition by weight.

12. The composition according to claim 11 , wherein the fourth particle population comprises less than 5% by weight of metal oxide particles.

13. The composition according to claim 12 , wherein the fourth particle population comprises clay particles, synthetic mica particles, or natural mica particles.

14. The composition according to claim 13 , wherein the composition comprises a fifth particle population having an average particle size of greater than 8500 nm and makes up less than 3.5% of the composition by weight.

15. The composition according to claim 14 , wherein the fifth particle composition is mostly comprised of amorphous, spherical, porous silica particles.

16. The composition according to claim 15 , wherein the amorphous, spherical, porous silica particles comprise silicon oxide hydrate.

17. The composition according to claim 16 , wherein the composition comprise one or more types of particle agglomerates.

18. The composition according to claim 17 , wherein at least 33% of the weight concentration of the mixture of structurally diverse matrix particles is composed of UV-protectant metal oxide particles having a minimum particle size of greater than 100 nm, wherein scanning electron microscope analysis of the composition fails to identify a significant number of discrete matrix particles having a size of 100 nm or less.

19. The composition according to claim 9 , wherein the weight ratio of the mesoporous zinc oxide particles to a calcium sodium borosilicate component is about 6:1 to about 12:1.
