Abstract

A surgical instrument is disclosed which comprises a staple firing system and a tissue cutting system. In various instances, the surgical instrument further comprises a lockout configured to prevent the retraction of the staple firing system until the tissue cutting system has been completely actuated. The surgical instrument can also comprise a bypass configured to deactivate the lockout.

Claims (57)

1. A surgical stapler for treating the tissue of a patient, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector is configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw toward said first jaw;

a firing system, comprising:

a staple driver, wherein said firing system is configured to push said staple driver toward said anvil during a firing stroke and retract said staple driver during a retraction stroke; and

a cutting member configured to cut the tissue during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises a cutting edge which is exposed from said cartridge body during said cutting stroke, and wherein said stapler driver is operable independently of said cutting member;

a lockout configured to prevent:

said staple driver from being retracted during said firing stroke; and

said cutting member from being retracted during said cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member extends alongside said staple driver and is movable relative to said staple driver; and

a bypass configured to overcome said lockout such that the staple driver can be retracted during said firing stroke.

2. A surgical stapler for treating the tissue of a patient, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector is configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw toward said first jaw;

a firing system, comprising:

a staple driver, wherein said firing system is configured to push said staple driver toward said anvil during a firing stroke and retract said staple driver during a retraction stroke; and

a cutting member configured to cut the tissue during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises a cutting edge which is exposed from said cartridge body during said cutting stroke, and wherein said stapler driver is operable independently of said cutting member;

a lock configured to prevent:

said staple driver from being retracted prior to the completion of said cutting stroke; and

said cutting member from being retracted prior to the completion of said cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member extends alongside said staple driver and is movable relative to said staple driver; and

a bypass configured to overcome said lock such that the staple driver and said cutting member can be retracted prior to the completion of said cutting stroke.

3. A surgical stapler for treating the tissue of a patient, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector is configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure system configured to move said second jaw toward said first jaw;

a firing system, comprising:

a staple driver, wherein said firing system is configured to push said staple driver toward said anvil during a firing stroke and retract said staple driver during a retraction stroke; and

a cutting member configured to cut the tissue during a cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member comprises a cutting edge which is exposed from said cartridge body during said cutting stroke, and wherein said firing system is operable independently of said closure system;

a lockout configured to prevent:

said staple driver from being retracted during said cutting stroke; and

said cutting member from being retracted during said cutting stroke, wherein said cutting member extends alongside said staple driver and is movable relative to said staple driver; and

a bypass configured to overcome said lockout such that said cutting member can be retracted during said cutting stroke.

4. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said lockout is configured to automatically move into an unlocked position after the completion of said firing stroke and said cutting stroke such that said staple driver and said cutting member can be retracted.

5. The surgical stapler of claim 4 , wherein said lockout is further configured to hold said staple driver in a fully actuated position while said cutting member moves through said cutting stroke.

6. The surgical stapler of claim 2 , wherein said lock is configured to automatically move into an unlocked position after the completion of said firing stroke and said cutting stroke such that said staple driver and said cutting member can be retracted.

7. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , wherein said lock is further configured to hold said staple driver in a fully actuated position while said cutting member moves through said cutting stroke.

8. The surgical stapler of claim 3 , wherein said lockout is configured to automatically move into an unlocked position after the completion of said firing stroke and said cutting stroke such that said staple driver and said cutting member can be retracted.

9. The surgical stapler of claim 8 , wherein said lockout is further configured to hold said staple driver in a fully actuated position while said cutting member moves through said cutting stroke.
