Abstract

A surgical stapling system is disclosed. The system comprises a distal end, an unspent staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein, a channel configured to receive the unspent staple cartridge, and an anvil configured to deform said staples. The system further comprises a firing drive movable through a firing stroke and a primary lockout configured to prevent the firing member from being moved through the firing stroke if the unspent staple cartridge is not positioned in the channel. The system further comprises a secondary lockout actuatable to prevent the firing member from being moved through the firing stroke, wherein the secondary lockout is actuated in response to the firing stroke being prevented by the primary lockout.

Claims (42)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft comprising a longitudinal axis;

a firing drive comprising a firing member movable along said longitudinal axis;

an end effector, comprising:

a distal end;

a channel configured to receive a staple cartridge;

an anvil; and

a primary lockout configured to block said firing member from being moved toward said distal end if a staple cartridge is not positioned in said channel; and

a secondary lockout actuatable to prevent said firing member from being moved toward said distal end, wherein said secondary lockout is actuated in response to the distal movement of said firing member being blocked by said primary lockout.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said firing member comprises a first portion and a second portion, and wherein said secondary lockout is positioned intermediate said first portion and said second portion.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said secondary lockout is compressed between said first portion and said second portion above a compression threshold when said primary lockout blocks the distal movement of said firing member.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein said secondary lockout engages said shaft when said secondary lockout is actuated.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein said secondary lockout is resilient and returns to a deactuated configuration when the compression applied to said secondary lockout falls below said compression threshold.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising means for damping the speed of said firing member.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising said staple cartridge.

8. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft comprising a longitudinal axis;

a firing drive comprising a firing member movable along said longitudinal axis;

an end effector, comprising:

a distal end;

a channel configured to receive a staple cartridge;

an anvil;

a cartridge lockout configured to inhibit said firing member from being moved toward said distal end if an unspent staple cartridge is not positioned in said channel; and

a shaft lockout actuatable to prevent said firing member from being moved toward said distal end, wherein said shaft lockout is actuated in response to the distal movement of said firing member being inhibited by said cartridge lockout.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said firing member comprises a first portion and a second portion, and wherein said shaft lockout is positioned intermediate said first portion and said second portion.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein said shaft lockout is compressed between said first portion and said second portion above a compression threshold when said cartridge lockout blocks the distal movement of said firing member.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said shaft lockout engages said shaft when said shaft lockout is actuated.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said shaft lockout is resilient and returns to a deactuated configuration when the compression applied to said shaft lockout falls below said compression threshold.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , further comprising means for damping the speed of said firing member.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , further comprising said staple cartridge.

15. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a distal end;

an unspent staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein;

a channel configured to receive said unspent staple cartridge;

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a firing drive movable through a firing stroke;

a primary lockout configured to prevent said firing drive from being moved through said firing stroke if said unspent staple cartridge is not positioned in said channel; and

a secondary lockout actuatable to prevent said firing drive from being moved through said firing stroke, wherein said secondary lockout is actuated in response to said firing stroke being prevented by said primary lockout.

16. The surgical instrument of system claim 15 , wherein said firing drive comprises a first firing member and a second firing member, and wherein said secondary lockout is positioned intermediate said first firing member and said second firing member.

17. The surgical instrument of system claim 16 , wherein said secondary lockout is compressed between said first firing member and said second firing member above a compression threshold when said primary lockout blocks the distal movement of said firing drive.

18. The surgical instrument system of claim 17 , wherein said secondary lockout is resilient and returns to a deactuated configuration when the compression applied to said secondary lockout falls below said compression threshold.

19. The surgical instrument system of claim 15 , further comprising means for damping the speed of said firing drive.
