Abstract

Described herein are methods and apparatuses for identifying a clot material in contact with a suction catheter. For example, an apparatus as described herein may include a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen, and an aspiration opening sensor comprising at least two electrodes, and a controller configured to distinguish between clot and blood based on an impedance signal between the two or more electrodes.

Claims (58)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

an aspiration opening sensor comprising at least two electrodes that are each positioned on a rim of the aspiration opening and extend at least partially around the rim and into the suction lumen; and

a controller coupled to the aspiration opening sensor and configured to distinguish between clot and blood based on an impedance signal between the at least two electrodes.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller comprises sensing circuitry configured to distinguish between clot and blood based on the impedance signal between the at least two electrodes.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to distinguish between clot and blood when a negative pressure is applied.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to distinguish between clot and blood when a mechanical force is applied against the aspiration opening.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the aspiration opening is on a tapered side of the distal end region of the flexible elongate body.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are recessed from the rim.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are spaced equally apart from each other on the rim of the aspiration opening.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are positioned opposite each other across the aspiration opening.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are positioned on the rim of the aspiration opening between an 11 o'clock position and a 1 o'clock position relative to the aspiration opening.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of smaller flow-modifying openings into the suction lumen positioned adjacent to the aspiration opening.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a second sensor positioned within the suction lumen of the flexible elongate body.

12. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen on a tapered side of a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

an aspiration opening sensor comprising two or more electrodes positioned on a proximal half of a rim of the aspiration opening; and

a controller coupled to the aspiration opening sensor and configured to distinguish between clot and blood based on an impedance signal between the two or more electrodes.

13. An apparatus comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a suction lumen extending therethrough;

an aspiration opening into the suction lumen on a tapered side of a distal end region of the flexible elongate body;

an aspiration opening sensor comprising at least two electrodes that are each positioned on a rim of the aspiration opening; and

a proximal suction port in communication with the suction lumen; and

wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are configured to couple to a controller to provide electrical impedance input to distinguish between clot and blood.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a second sensor at the distal end region.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the second sensor is within the suction lumen.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are recessed from the rim.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are spaced equally apart from each other on the rim of the aspiration opening.

18. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are positioned opposite each other across the aspiration opening.

19. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the at least two electrodes of the aspiration opening sensor are positioned on a proximal half of the rim of the aspiration opening between an 11 o'clock position and a 1 o'clock position relative to the aspiration opening, wherein a 12 o'clock position is a proximal-most region of the rim of the aspiration opening.

20. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a plurality of smaller flow-modifying openings into the suction lumen positioned adjacent to the aspiration opening.

21. A method of distinguishing a blood clot from blood, the method comprising:

advancing a flexible elongate catheter having a suction lumen within a blood vessel, wherein the flexible elongate catheter comprises an aspiration opening into the suction lumen at a distal end region of the flexible elongate catheter and at least two electrodes that are each on a rim of the aspiration opening and extend at least partially around the rim and into the suction lumen; and

determining if the aspiration opening is engaged with a blood clot or with blood based on an impedance measured from the at least two electrodes that are each on the rim of the aspiration opening and extend at least partially around the rim and into the suction lumen.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein determining comprises applying negative pressure within the suction lumen.

23. The method of claim 21 , further comprising indicating that the aspiration opening is engaged with a blood clot.

24. The method of claim 21 , further comprising applying alternating current having a frequency of between about 1 kHz and 1 MHz.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the alternating current has a frequency of between about 10 kHz and 100 kHz.

26. The method of claim 21 , further comprising delaying the step of determining if the aspiration opening is engaged with a blood clot or with blood for a delay period after a force is applied.

27. The method of claim 21 , wherein determining if the aspiration opening is engaged with blood clot or with blood is based on both an impedance measurements from the at least two electrodes at or adjacent to the aspiration opening and a second sensor positioned within the suction lumen of the flexible elongate catheter.

28. The method of claim 21 , further comprising adjusting suction through the suction lumen based on the impedance measured from the at least two electrodes at or adjacent to the aspiration opening.

29. The method of claim 21 , further comprising applying negative pressure within the suction lumen and confirming that blood clot material has been cleared through the suction lumen.
