Abstract

Wellbore synthesis techniques are disclosed suitable for use in geothermal applications. Embodiments are provided where open hole drilled wellbores are sealed while drilling to form an impervious layer at the wellbore/formation interface. The techniques may be chemical, thermal, mechanical, biological and are fully intended to irreversibly damage the formation in terms of the permeability thereof. With the permeability negated, the wellbore may be used to create a closed loop surface to surface geothermal well operable in the absence of well casing for maximizing thermal transfer to a circulating working fluid. Formulations for the working and drilling fluids are disclosed.

Claims (18)

1 . A method comprising:

introducing a geothermal working fluid into a lateral wellbore of a geothermal well extending into a formation of a subsurface heat recovery zone, an interface of the formation of the lateral wellbore sealed absent casing prior to the introducing of the geothermal working fluid; and

after introducing the geothermal working fluid, maintaining the interface sealed absent casing by circulating a sealant in a closed loop through the lateral wellbore.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sealant comprises a sealant configured to seal the interface by a chemical reaction.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the chemical reaction damages the formation.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the chemical reaction comprises precipitation of a solid.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sealant is configured to penetrate into the formation.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the lateral wellbore extends from a surface wellbore extending from the terranean surface.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the surface wellbore is an inlet wellbore and wherein the lateral wellbore is fluidly connected to an outlet wellbore extending to the terranean surface.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sealant comprises an alkali silicate.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the subsurface heat recovery zone is a basement formation.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sealant circulated in the closed loop through the lateral wellbore after introducing the geothermal working fluid is a component of the geothermal working fluid.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sealant circulated in the closed loop through the lateral wellbore after introducing the geothermal working fluid comprises a thermally conductive additive.

12 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

creating the closed loop at least in part by sealing, during a drilling process, the interface absent casing; and

after creating the closed loop by sealing the interface absent casing, displacing a drilling fluid of the drilling process from the lateral wellbore with the geothermal working fluid.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the sealant circulated in the closed loop through the lateral wellbore after introducing the geothermal working fluid is a second sealant and wherein the creating the closed loop by sealing is with a first sealant that is a component of the drilling fluid.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the creating the closed loop is further at least in part by forming a seal of at least a portion of the wellbore of the well with casing.
