Abstract

An end effector is disclosed comprising a cartridge channel, a staple cartridge positionable in the cartridge channel, and a firing assembly configured to lock itself if the staple cartridge is not positioned in the cartridge channel. Moreover, the firing assembly is configured to lock itself if the staple cartridge has been at least partially spent.

Claims (51)

1. A shaft assembly for use with a surgical system, said shaft assembly comprising:

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body including staple cavities;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities; and

a sled movable between an unfired position and a fired position during a firing stroke to eject said staples from said staple cavities;

an end effector, comprising:

a cartridge channel configured to receive said staple cartridge, wherein said cartridge channel comprises a lockout recess;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a lock spring; and

a firing member, comprising:

a firing bar comprising a cutting edge configured to cut the tissue of a patient during said firing stroke; and

a lock rotatably mounted to said firing bar, wherein said lock is rotatable between an unlocked position and a locked position, wherein said sled is configured to hold said lock in said unlocked position when said staple cartridge is seated in said cartridge channel and said sled is in said unfired position, and wherein said lock is rotatable from said unlocked position to said locked position by said lock spring when either said staple cartridge is not in said cartridge channel or said sled is not in said unfired position.

2. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , further comprising staple drivers, wherein said sled is configured to engage said staple drivers to eject said staples from said staple cavities during said firing stroke.

3. The shaft assembly of claim 2 , wherein said staple drivers are integrally-formed with said staples.

4. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said firing bar further comprises a coupling member, wherein said coupling member comprises said cutting edge, and wherein said coupling member comprises a cartridge cam configured to engage said cartridge channel and an anvil cam configured to engage said anvil during said firing stroke.

5. The shaft assembly of claim 4 , wherein said anvil is rotatable relative to said cartridge channel between an open position and a closed position, and wherein said coupling member is configured to control the position of said anvil relative to said staple cartridge.

6. The shaft assembly of claim 4 , wherein said cartridge channel is rotatable relative to said anvil between an open position and a closed position, and wherein said coupling member is configured to control the position of said staple cartridge relative to said anvil.

7. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said anvil is rotatable relative to said cartridge channel between an open position and a closed position, and wherein said shaft assembly further comprises a closure member configured to move said anvil toward said closed position.

8. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said cartridge channel is rotatable relative to said anvil between an open position and a closed position, and wherein said shaft assembly further comprises a closure member configured to move said cartridge channel toward said closed position.

9. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said end effector comprises a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein said lock extends distally with respect to said cutting edge.

10. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said lock is biased into said lockout recess by said lock spring when said firing stroke is initiated and either said staple cartridge is not in said cartridge channel or said sled is not in said unfired position, and wherein said firing stroke is stopped by said lock and said lockout recess before said staples are ejected from said staple cavities.

11. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said firing bar is not biased toward said lockout recess by said lock spring.

12. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said lock is configured to push said sled through said firing stroke if said staple cartridge is seated in said cartridge channel and said sled is in said unfired position at the initiation of said firing stroke.

13. The shaft assembly of claim 12 , wherein said firing member is retractable after at least a portion of said firing stroke has been completed, and wherein said sled is not retractable with said firing member.

14. The shaft assembly of claim 12 , wherein said firing member is retractable after at least a portion of said firing stroke has been completed, and wherein said lock is configured to remain in said unlocked position as said lock is retracted past said lock spring.

15. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said lock comprises a cantilever beam comprising a proximal end fixedly mounted to said cartridge channel and a distal end movable relative said proximal end.

16. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said cartridge channel is removably attachable to said end effector.

17. The shaft assembly of claim 1 , wherein said cartridge channel is not removably attachable to said end effector.

18. A shaft assembly for use with a surgical system, said shaft assembly comprising:

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body;

staples, wherein each said staple is at least partially stored in said cartridge body; and

a sled movable between an unfired position and a fired position during a firing stroke to eject said staples from said cartridge body;

an end effector, comprising:

a cartridge channel configured to receive said staple cartridge, wherein said cartridge channel comprises a lockout;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a biasing member; and

a firing assembly, comprising:

a firing member; and

a lock rotatably mounted to said firing member, wherein said lock is rotatable between an unlocked position and a locked position, wherein said sled is configured to hold said lock in said unlocked position when said staple cartridge is seated in said cartridge channel and said sled is in said unfired position, and wherein said lock is rotatable from said unlocked position to said locked position by said biasing member when either said staple cartridge is not in said cartridge channel or said sled is not in said unfired position.

19. An end effector for use with a surgical system, said end effector comprising:

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body;

staples, wherein each said staple is at least partially stored in said cartridge body; and

a sled movable between an unfired position and a fired position during a firing stroke to eject said staples from said cartridge body;

a cartridge channel configured to receive said staple cartridge, wherein said cartridge channel comprises a lockout;

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a biasing member; and

a firing assembly, comprising:

a firing member; and

a lock rotatably mounted to said firing member, wherein said lock is rotatable between an unlocked position and a locked position, wherein said sled is configured to hold said lock in said unlocked position when said staple cartridge is seated in said cartridge channel and said sled is in said unfired position, and wherein said lock is rotatable from said unlocked position to said locked position by said biasing member when either said staple cartridge is not in said cartridge channel or said sled is not in said unfired position.
