Abstract

Surgical end effectors having an empty and missing cartridge lockout are disclosed. The surgical end effectors can comprise a first jaw, a second jaw rotatably coupled to the first jaw, and a multi-function firing member configured to translate during a firing stroke, wherein the firing member comprises a notch. The surgical end effectors can also include a lockout spring comprising a hook. The notch in the firing member can be aligned to receive the hook during the firing stroke unless an unfired staple cartridge is positioned in the first jaw. A sled assembly of the unfired staple cartridge can be positioned to deflect the hook out of alignment with the notch.

Claims (54)

1. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw rotatably coupled to said first jaw;

a firing member configured to translate along an axis during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises a notch defined laterally into said firing member toward the axis; and

a lockout spring comprising a hook, wherein said notch is aligned to receive said hook during the firing stroke unless an unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw, wherein said firing member applies a tensile force on said lockout spring when said firing stroke is initiated and said hook is received by said notch, and wherein a sled assembly of the unfired staple cartridge is positioned to deflect said hook out of alignment with said notch.

2. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said lockout spring comprises a leaf spring comprising:

a proximal portion fixed to said first jaw; and

a distal portion comprising said hook.

3. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said firing member comprises:

a cutting edge;

an intermediate portion supporting said cutting edge; and

a lug protruding laterally from said intermediate portion, wherein said notch is defined in said lug.

4. The surgical end effector of claim 3 , wherein said firing member further comprises:

a first flange configured to cammingly engage said first jaw; and

a second flange configured to cammingly engage said second jaw.

5. The surgical end effector of claim 4 , wherein said lockout spring is configured to prevent translation of said firing member distally past said hook unless the unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw.

6. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises a cartridge support surface, wherein a recess is defined in said cartridge support surface, and wherein said hook is deflected at least partially into said recess when the unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw.

7. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said lockout spring comprises a spring arm supporting said hook, and wherein said spring arm is laterally offset from said firing member.

8. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said lockout spring comprises a second hook, and wherein said firing member comprises a second notch aligned to receive said second hook during the firing stroke unless the unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw.

9. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw rotatably coupled to said first jaw;

a firing member configured to translate along an axis during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises:

a laterally-protruding lug; and

a lock defined in said laterally-protruding lug; and

a lockout spring comprising a laterally-protruding tab, wherein said laterally-protruding tab protrudes laterally relative to the axis, wherein said lock is positioned to receive said laterally-protruding tab during the firing stroke unless an unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw, and wherein said firing member applies a tensile force on said lockout spring when said firing stroke is initiated and said laterally-protruding tab is received by said lock.

10. The surgical end effector of claim 9 , further comprising said unfired staple cartridge comprising a sled assembly configured to translate distally during the firing stroke.

11. The surgical end effector of claim 10 , wherein said lock is configured to translate along a lock path during the firing stroke, and wherein said sled assembly in said unfired staple cartridge is configured to deflect said laterally-protruding tab out of said lock path.

12. The surgical end effector of claim 11 , wherein said first jaw comprises a cartridge support surface, wherein a recess is defined in said cartridge support surface, and wherein said laterally-protruding tab is deflected into said recess when the unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw.

13. The surgical end effector of claim 9 , wherein said lockout spring comprises a leaf spring comprising:

a first portion fixed to said first jaw;

a second portion supporting said laterally-protruding tab; and

a spring arm extending intermediate said first portion and said second portion, wherein said spring arm is laterally offset from said firing member.

14. The surgical end effector of claim 9 , wherein said firing member further comprises:

a support comprising a cutting edge;

a first flange extending from said support, wherein said first flange is configured to cammingly engage said first jaw; and

a second flange extending from said support, wherein said second flange is configured to cammingly engage said second jaw.

15. The surgical end effector of claim 9 , wherein said firing member further comprises a second laterally-protruding lug and a second lock defined in said second laterally-protruding lug, wherein said lockout spring further comprises a second laterally-protruding tab, and wherein said second lock is positioned to receive said second laterally-protruding tab during the firing stroke unless the unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw.

16. A surgical end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw rotatably coupled to said first jaw; and

a lockout arrangement, comprising:

a lock configured to translate along a lock path during a firing stroke; and

a lockout spring comprising an inwardly-protruding tab, wherein said inwardly-protruding tab protrudes inwardly toward the lock path, wherein said lock is positioned to receive said inwardly-protruding tab during the firing stroke unless an unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw, and wherein said lockout spring is under tension when said firing stroke is initiated and said inwardly-protruding tab is received by said lock.

17. The surgical end effector of claim 16 , further comprising said unfired staple cartridge comprising a sled assembly configured to translate distally during the firing stroke, wherein said lock is configured to translate along a lock path during the firing stroke, and wherein said sled assembly in said unfired staple cartridge is configured to deflect said inwardly-protruding tab out of said lock path.

18. The surgical end effector of claim 17 , wherein said first jaw comprises a cartridge support surface, wherein a recess is defined in said cartridge support surface, and wherein said inwardly-protruding tab is deflected into said recess when said unfired staple cartridge is positioned in said first jaw.
