Drape attachment to sterile adapters for use in a robotic surgical system
Generally, a sterile adapter for use in robotic surgery may include a frame configured to be interposed between a tool driver and a surgical tool, a plate assembly coupled to the frame, and at least one rotatable coupler supported by the plate assembly and configured to communicate torque from an output drive of the tool driver to an input drive of the surgical tool.
1. A sterile barrier for use in a robotic surgical system, the sterile barrier comprising:
a sterile adapter comprising:
a frame configured to be interposed between a tool driver and a surgical tool, wherein the frame has a frame perimeter; and
at least one peripheral projection extending laterally around at least a portion of the frame perimeter, wherein the frame is more rigid than the at least one peripheral projection; and
a sterile drape coupled to the projection.
2. The sterile barrier of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises polycarbonate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), nylon, or a polycarbonate-ABS blend.
3. The sterile barrier of claim 1 , wherein the at least one peripheral projection comprises a flexible elastomeric material.
4. The sterile barrier of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral projection comprises an outer flange extending laterally around the frame perimeter.
5. The sterile barrier of claim 4 , wherein the peripheral projection extends laterally between about 0.5 cm and 1.0 cm.
6. The sterile barrier of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral projection is integrally formed with the frame.
7. The sterile barrier of claim 6 , wherein the peripheral projection is co-injection molded with the frame.
8. The sterile barrier of claim 1 , wherein the sterile drape is thermally bonded to the peripheral projection.
9. The sterile barrier of claim 1 , wherein the at least one peripheral projection is a first peripheral projection, the sterile barrier further comprising a second peripheral projection layered with the first peripheral projection.
10. The sterile barrier of claim 1 , wherein the sterile drape is disposed between the first and second peripheral projections.
11. A sterile barrier for use in a robotic surgical system, the sterile barrier comprising:
a sterile adapter comprising:
a frame configured to be interposed between a tool driver and a surgical tool, wherein the frame has a frame perimeter and a first peripheral projection, the first peripheral projection extending laterally around at least a portion of the frame perimeter, and wherein the frame includes a first material and the first peripheral projection includes a second material different from the first material; and
a sterile drape coupled to the first peripheral projection.
12. The sterile barrier of claim 11 , wherein the first material is more rigid than the second material, and wherein the second material comprises a flexible elastomeric material.
13. The sterile barrier of claim 11 , wherein the first peripheral projection comprises an outer flange extending laterally around the frame perimeter.
14. The sterile barrier of claim 11 , wherein the first peripheral projection is co-injection molded with the frame.
15. The sterile barrier of claim 11 , wherein the sterile drape is thermally bonded to the first peripheral projection.
16. The sterile barrier of claim 11 , further comprising a second peripheral projection layered with the first peripheral projection.
17. The sterile barrier of claim 16 , wherein the sterile drape is disposed between the first peripheral projection and the second peripheral projection.
18. The sterile barrier of claim 11 wherein the sterile drape includes a third material that comprise a urethane.
19. The sterile barrier of claim 11 , wherein the frame comprises a substantially rectangular shape.
