Abstract

This application is directed to an apparatus for providing electrical charge to a vehicle. The apparatus comprises a driven mass, a generator, a charger, a hardware controller, and a communication circuit. The driven mass rotates in response to a kinetic energy of the vehicle and is coupled to a shaft such that rotation of the driven mass causes the shaft to rotate. The driven mass exists in one of (1) an extended position and (2) a retracted position. The generator generates an electrical output based on a mechanical input coupled to the shaft such that rotation of the shaft causes the mechanical input to rotate. The charger is electrically coupled to the generator and: receives the electrical output, generates a charge output based on the electrical output, and conveys the charge output to the vehicle. The controller controls whether the driven mass is in the extended position or the retracted position in response to a signal received from the communication circuit.

Claims (48)

1. A system for providing electrical charge to electric-powered farm or construction equipment, the system comprising:

a driven mass configured to rotate in response to a kinetic energy of the electric powered farm or construction equipment, the driven mass coupled to a shaft such that rotation of the driven mass causes the shaft to rotate;

a generator configured to generate an electrical output based on a mechanical input, the mechanical input mechanically coupled to the shaft such that rotation of the shaft causes the mechanical input to rotate;

a gearbox coupled to the mechanical input and configured to change an angular velocity at which the mechanical input rotates, based on at least a velocity of the electric-powered farm or construction equipment, to vary the electrical output generated by the generator;

a filtering circuit configured to filter the electrical output from the generator;

a capacitor storage device comprising a plurality of ultracapacitors and electrically coupled with a motor of the electric-powered farm or construction equipment and with a battery storage device via a diode configured to inhibit a flow of energy from the battery storage device to the capacitor storage device, wherein the capacitor storage device is configured to:

receive a portion of the electrical output originating from the generator after being filtered by the filtering circuit,

store the portion of the electrical output as a first energy,

convey, via the diode, a part of the first energy to the battery storage device in one or more bursts based on a charge level of the battery storage device dropping below a threshold value, and

convey another part of the first energy to the motor; and

a dashboard comprising a plurality of indicators each associated with respective ultracapacitors of the plurality of ultracapacitors, the plurality of indicators configured to:

indicate that the battery storage device is being charged by the part of the first energy conveyed from the plurality of ultracapacitors or that the motor is receiving the another part of the first energy conveyed from the plurality of ultracapacitors; and

indicate a storage configuration wherein respective ultracapacitors of the plurality of ultracapacitors do not convey the part of the first energy to the battery storage device and do not convey the another part of the first energy to the motor.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electric-powered farm or construction equipment is an electric tractor.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electric-powered farm or construction equipment is an electric swather.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the driven mass is configured to transition to an extended position wherein the driven mass is positioned in contact with a surface of the ground.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery storage device comprises a charging port and wherein the part of the first energy is conveyed from the capacitor storage device to the battery storage device via a charging cable and the charging port.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mechanical input is mechanically coupled to the shaft by one or more of a chain, a belt, a gearing system, and a pulley system.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor storage device is further configured to store an excess portion of the electrical output when the battery storage device or the motor is unable to accept all portions of the electrical output conveyed from the generator.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the capacitor storage device is further configured to convey the excess portion of the electrical output to the battery storage device or to the motor on demand.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery storage device is configured to:

receive the part of the first energy from the capacitor storage device to stabilize a voltage level of the battery storage device to prevent the voltage level from dropping below a low threshold voltage.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor storage device is further configured to:

convey at least the another part of the first energy to the motor in one or more bursts based on an energy demand of the motor.

11. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a charger electrically coupled to the generator and configured to:

receive the electrical output from the generator;

generate a charge output based on the electrical output; and

convey the charge output to the capacitor storage device.

12. A method of providing electrical charge to electric-powered farm or construction equipment, the method comprising:

removably engaging a driven mass with a wheel of the electric-powered farm or construction equipment;

rotating the driven mass in response to a kinetic energy of the wheel of the electric-powered farm or construction equipment, the driven mass coupled to a shaft such that rotation of the driven mass causes the shaft to rotate;

generating, via a generator, an electrical output based on a mechanical input via a generator, the generator having a mechanical input mechanically coupled to the shaft such that rotation of the shaft causes the mechanical input to rotate;

changing, by a gearbox coupled to the mechanical input, an angular velocity at which the mechanical input rotates, based on at least a velocity of the electric-powered farm or construction equipment, to vary the electrical output generated by the generator;

filtering the electrical output from the generator;

receiving, at a capacitor storage device a portion of the electrical output originating from the generator after being filtered by the filtering circuit;

storing the portion of the electrical output as a first energy of the capacitor storage device;

conveying, via a diode, a part of the first energy to a battery storage device in one or more bursts based on a charge level of the battery storage device dropping below a threshold value;

conveying another part of the first energy to a motor of the electric-powered farm or construction equipment; and

indicating, via one or more indicators, one or more operational configurations of the capacitor storage device, the one or more operational configurations comprising:

an active configuration wherein the capacitor storage device conveys the part of the first energy to the battery storage device or conveys the another part of the first energy to the motor; and

a storage configuration wherein the capacitor storage device does not convey the part of the first energy to the battery storage device and does not convey the another part of the first energy to the motor.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the driven mass comprises a wheel, the method further comprising positioning the wheel in contact with a ground surface on which the electric-powered farm or construction equipment travels.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the mechanical input is mechanically coupled to the shaft by one or more of a chain, a belt, a gearing system, and a pulley system.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising storing, in the capacitor storage device, an excess portion of the electrical output when the battery storage device or the motor is unable to accept all portions of the electrical output conveyed from the generator.
