Abstract

A method of preparing a staple cartridge includes forming first staples with a first alloy, and forming second staples with a second alloy that is different than the first alloy. The method includes positioning the first staples into staple cavities of a first row of staple cavities of the staple cartridge, the first row of staple cavities being a first distance from an elongate slot of the staple cartridge, and positioning the second staples into staple cavities of a second row of staple cavities, the second row of staple cavities being a second distance from the elongate slot of the staple cartridge. The second distance is greater than the first distance. The first staples are configured to degrade at a first rate in a tissue environment, and the second staples are configured to degrade at a second rate that is different than the first rate.

Claims (49)

1 . A method of preparing a staple cartridge, the method comprising:

forming first staples with a first alloy, wherein the first staples comprise a material configured to deliver radiotherapy into a tissue environment within a patient, the material comprising a doped alloy comprising an alpha particle emitter;

forming second staples with a second alloy that is different than the first alloy;

positioning the first staples into staple cavities of a first row of staple cavities of the staple cartridge, wherein the first row of staple cavities is a first distance from an elongate slot of the staple cartridge; and

positioning the second staples into staple cavities of a second row of staple cavities, wherein the second row of staple cavities is a second distance from the elongate slot of the staple cartridge, wherein the second distance is greater than the first distance;

wherein the first staples are configured to degrade at a first rate in the tissue environment within the patient, and wherein the second staples are configured to degrade at a second rate in the tissue environment that is different than the first rate.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second rate is faster than the first rate.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

forming third staples with a third alloy that is different than the first alloy and the second alloy; and

positioning the third staples into staple cavities of a third row of staple cavities wherein the third row of staple cavities is a third distance from the elongate slot of the staple cartridge, wherein the third distance is greater than the second distance;

wherein the third staples are configured to degrade at a third rate in the tissue environment that is different than the second rate.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the third rate is faster than the second rate.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling an implantable adjunct to a deck of the staple cartridge.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the implantable adjunct is comprised of an absorbable polymer.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first alloy is selected from the group consisting of a magnesium-based alloy, a zinc-based alloy, and an iron-based alloy; and

the second alloy is selected from the group consisting of a magnesium-based alloy, a zinc-based alloy, and an iron-based alloy.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first staples further comprise a radiosensitizer.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the radiosensitizer comprises hafnium oxide.

10 . A method of preparing a staple cartridge, the method comprising:

forming first staples with a first alloy, wherein the first staples comprise a material configured to deliver a treatment therapy into a tissue environment within a patient, the material comprising a doped alloy comprising an alpha particle emitter;

forming second staples with a second alloy that is different than the first alloy;

positioning the first staples into staple cavities of a first row of staple cavities of the staple cartridge, wherein the first row of staple cavities is a first distance from an elongate slot of the staple cartridge; and

positioning the second staples into staple cavities of a second row of staple cavities, wherein the second row of staple cavities is a second distance from the elongate slot of the staple cartridge, wherein the second distance is greater than the first distance.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising coupling an implantable adjunct to a deck of the staple cartridge.

12 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

coating the first staples with a first coating; and

coating the second staples with a second coating that is different than the first coating.

13 . A method of preparing a staple cartridge, the method comprising:

forming first staples with a first alloy, wherein the first staples comprise a material configured to deliver radiotherapy into a tissue environment within a patient, the material comprising a doped alloy comprising an alpha particle emitter;

coating the first staples with a first coating;

forming second staples with a second alloy that is different than the first alloy;

coating the second staples with a second coating that is the same as the first coating;

positioning the first staples into staple cavities of a first row of staple cavities of the staple cartridge, wherein the first row of staple cavities is a first distance from an elongate slot of the staple cartridge; and

positioning the second staples into staple cavities of a second row of staple cavities, wherein the second row of staple cavities is a second distance from the elongate slot of the staple cartridge, wherein the second distance is greater than the first distance;

wherein the first staples are configured to degrade at a first rate in the tissue environment within the patient, and wherein the second staples are configured to degrade at a second rate in the tissue environment that is different than the first rate.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the second rate is faster than the first rate.

15 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

forming third staples with a third alloy that is different than the first alloy and the second alloy;

coating the third staples with a third coating that is the same as the first coating;

positioning the third staples into staple cavities of a third row of staple cavities

wherein the third row of staple cavities is a third distance from the elongate slot of the staple cartridge, wherein the third distance is greater than the second distance;

wherein the third staples are configured to degrade at a third rate in the tissue environment that is different than the second rate.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the third rate is faster than the second rate.

17 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising coupling an implantable adjunct to a deck of the staple cartridge.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the implantable adjunct is comprised of an absorbable polymer.

19 . The method of claim 13 , wherein:

the first alloy is selected from the group consisting of a magnesium-based alloy, a zinc-based alloy, and an iron-based alloy; and

the second alloy is selected from the group consisting of a magnesium-based alloy, a zinc-based alloy, and an iron-based alloy.
