Abstract

A surgical instrument can comprise a handle including a battery cavity and electrical contacts and, in addition, a battery removably positionable in the battery cavity. The battery is configured to engage and supply power to the electrical contacts when the battery is operably seated in the battery cavity. The handle further comprises diagnostic means for assessing whether the handle is in a suitable operating and a battery lockout configured to permit the battery from being operably seated in the battery cavity if the diagnostic means determines that the handle is not in a suitable operating condition. Additionally or alternatively, the handle can comprise a battery lock configured to prevent the battery from being disengaged from the electrical contacts when the handle is transmitting an operating motion to a shaft assembly attached to the handle, for example. Either one system or two systems can comprise the battery lockout and battery lock.

Claims (51)

1. A surgical instrument assembly, comprising:

a handle, comprising:

a battery cavity; and

electrical contacts;

a battery removably positionable in said battery cavity, wherein said battery is configured to engage said electrical contacts when said battery is in an operably seated position in said battery cavity;

diagnostic means for assessing whether said handle is suitable for operation; and

a battery lockout configured to:

permit said battery to be operably seated in said battery cavity when said diagnostic means determines that said handle is suitable for operation; and

prevent said battery from being operably seated in said battery cavity if said diagnostic means determines that said handle is not suitable for operation.

2. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 , wherein said battery lockout comprises a lock arm movable between an unextended position and an extended position, and wherein said lock arm is configured to prevent said battery from being operably seated in said battery cavity when said lock arm is in said extended position.

3. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 2 , wherein said lock arm comprises a cantilever beam integrally formed with said handle.

4. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 2 , wherein said battery lockout further comprises a solenoid configured to engage and deploy said lock arm.

5. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 4 , wherein said lock arm comprises a first lock arm, wherein said battery lockout further comprises a second lock arm movable between an unextended position and an extended position, and wherein said solenoid is configured to engage and deploy said second lock arm.

6. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 5 , wherein said first lock arm and said second lock arm are deployed simultaneously.

7. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

a shaft assembly;

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and

a firing system configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge, wherein said firing system comprises an electric motor which is powered by said battery when said battery is in said operably seated position.

8. A surgical instrument assembly, comprising:

a handle, comprising:

a battery receptacle; and

electrical contacts;

a battery removably engageable with said battery receptacle, wherein said battery is configured to engage said electrical contacts when said battery is in an operably seated position relative to said battery receptacle;

a battery lockout, comprising:

an unlocked configuration which permits said battery to be operably seated relative to said battery receptacle; and

a locked configuration which prevents said battery from being operably seated relative to said battery receptacle; and

an actuator configured to move said battery lockout from the unlocked configuration to the locked configuration when diagnostic means determines that said handle is not suitable for operation.

9. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 8 , wherein said battery lockout comprises a lock arm movable between an unextended position associated with said unlocked configuration and an extended position associated with said locked configuration, and wherein said lock arm is configured to prevent said battery from being operably seated relative to said battery receptace when said lock arm is in said extended position.

10. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 9 , wherein said lock arm comprises a cantilever beam integrally formed with said handle.

11. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 9 , wherein said actuator comprises a solenoid configured to engage and deploy said lock arm.

12. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 11 , wherein said lock arm comprises a first lock arm, wherein said battery lockout further comprises a second lock arm movable between an unextended position associated with said unlocked configuration and an extended position associated with said locked configuration, and wherein said solenoid is configured to engage and deploy said second lock arm.

13. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 12 , wherein said first lock arm and said second lock arm are deployed simultaneously.

14. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 8 , further comprising:

a shaft assembly;

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and

a firing system configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge, wherein said firing system comprises an electric motor which is powered by said battery when said battery is in said operably seated position.

15. A surgical instrument assembly, comprising:

a shaft assembly;

a handle, comprising:

a battery cavity;

electrical contacts; and

an operating system configured to generate an operating motion and transmit said operating motion to said shaft assembly;

a battery removably positionable in said battery cavity, wherein said battery is configured to engage said electrical contacts when said battery is in an operably seated position in said battery cavity, and wherein said battery is configured to supply power to said operating system when said battery is engaged with said electrical contacts;

a battery lock configured to prevent said battery from being removed from said battery cavity and disengaged from said electrical contacts when said operating system is generating said operating motion; and

an actuator configured to move said battery lock from an unlocked position to a locked position when diagnostic means determines that said handle is suitable for operation.

16. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein said battery lock comprises a lock arm movable between an unextended position associated with an unlocked configuration of said battery lock and an extended position associated with a locked configuration of said battery lock, and wherein said lock arm is configured to prevent said battery from being displaced from said operably seated position when said lock arm is in said extended position.

17. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 16 , wherein said lock arm comprises a cantilever beam integrally formed with said handle.

18. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 16 , wherein said actuator comprises a solenoid configured to engage and deploy said lock arm.

19. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 18 , wherein said lock arm comprises a first lock arm, wherein said battery lock further comprises a second lock arm movable between an unextended position associated with the unlocked configuration and an extended position associated with the locked configuration of said battery lock, and wherein said solenoid is configured to engage and deploy said second lock arm.

20. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 19 , wherein said first lock arm and said second lock arm are deployed simultaneously.
