Abstract

A telecommunications cabinet includes a cabinet housing; a fiber optic splitter; a plurality of spools disposed on a cable management surface; a panel oriented at a fixed angle relative to the access opening so that the panel extends laterally and rearwardly between the access opening and the cable management surface; and a plurality of adapters disposed on the panel.

Claims (41)

1. A telecommunications cabinet comprising:

a cabinet housing including a top, a bottom, a front and a back, the cabinet housing also including first and second opposite side walls that each extend between the front and the back of the cabinet housing and that each also extend between the top and bottom of the cabinet housing, the cabinet housing further including a front door at the front of the cabinet housing that can be opened to provide front access to an interior of the cabinet housing;

a fiber optic cord routing and management region within the interior of the cabinet housing that extends vertically along a majority of a height between the top and the bottom of the cabinet housing, the fiber optic cord routing and management region being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing, the fiber optic cord routing and management region including a first vertical column of cable management structures and a second vertical column of cable management structures, the first vertical column of cable management structures being positioned between the first side wall and the second vertical column of cable management structures, and the cable management structures of the first and second vertical columns of the cable management structures including curved surfaces;

an optical connection region within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, the optical connection region including a plurality of fiber optic adapter modules arranged in a group, each of the fiber optic adapter modules including a module housing having a front side at which a horizontal row of fiber optic adapters is mounted, the fiber optic adapters having front ports configured for receiving fiber optic connectors, the front ports being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing;

a connector storage location within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, the connector storage location having at least a portion that is positioned higher than an uppermost one of the fiber optic adapter modules, the connector storage location facing at least partially toward the second side of the cabinet housing, the connector storage location being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing; and

a fiber optic pigtail cord origination location within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, at least a portion of the fiber optic pigtail cord originating location being positioned lower in the cabinet housing than a lowermost one of the adapter modules, and the fiber optic pigtail cord origination location facing at least partially toward the second side of the cabinet housing.

2. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 1 , wherein the connector storage location includes an open region through which a connector storage module can be inserted, the open region facing at least partially toward the second side of the cabinet housing.

3. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 1 , wherein the connector storage location is defined at least in part by first and second module mounting supports between which a connector storage module can be mounted.

4. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 3 , wherein the connector storage location includes an open region for receiving the connector storage module, and wherein the open region faces at least partially toward the second side of the cabinet.

The telecommunications cabinet of claim 1 , wherein the connector storage location includes first and second module retaining portions for retaining a connector storage module at the connector storage location, the first module retaining portion being positioned forwardly in the cabinet housing with respect to the second module retaining portion.

6. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 1 , wherein when a fiber optic connector is stored at the connector storage location, the fiber optic connector is unable to be co-axially connected to another fiber optic connector.

7. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the cable management structures of the first or second vertical columns of cable management structures is positioned higher than an uppermost one of the fiber optic adapter modules.

8. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 1 , wherein the fiber optic pigtail cord origination location includes a fan-out module including a plurality of break-out locations, wherein a plurality of fiber optic pigtail cords originate from each break-out location.

The telecommunications cabinet of claim 1 , wherein the fiber optic pigtail origination location includes a component mounting housing having designated locations for mounting components which each include a plurality of fiber optic pigtail cords originating therefrom, the component mounting housing having a cord output side from which the fiber optic pigtail cords extend when the components are mounted at the designated locations, the cord output side facing at least partially toward the second side wall of the cabinet housing.

10. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 9 , wherein the component mounting housing is a fan-out module housing, and wherein the designated locations are configured for mounting cable break-outs.

11. A telecommunications cabinet comprising:

a cabinet housing including a top, a bottom, a front and a back, the cabinet housing also including first and second opposite side walls that each extend between the front and the back of the cabinet housing and that each also extend between the top and bottom of the cabinet housing, the cabinet housing further including a front door at the front of the cabinet housing that can be opened to provide front access to an interior of the cabinet housing;

a fiber optic cord routing and management region within the interior of the cabinet housing that extends vertically along a majority of a height between the top and the bottom of the cabinet housing, the fiber optic cord routing and management region being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing, the fiber optic cord routing and management region including a first vertical column of cable management structures and a second vertical column of cable management structures, the first vertical column of cable management structures being positioned between the first side wall and the second vertical column of cable management structures, and the cable management structures of the first and second vertical columns of cable management structures including curved surfaces;

an optical connection region within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, the optical connection region including a plurality of fiber optic adapter modules arranged in a group, each of the fiber optic adapter modules including a module housing having a front side at which a horizontal row of fiber optic adapters is mounted, the fiber optic adapters having front ports configured for receiving fiber optic connectors, the front ports being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing;

a connector storage location within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, the connector storage location having at least a portion that is positioned higher than an uppermost one of the fiber optic adapter modules, the connector storage location including a module retaining structure defining an open region for receiving a connector storage module, the connector storage location being configured such that a connector receiving side of the connector storage module faces at least partially toward the second side of the cabinet housing when the connector storage module is mounted in the open region, the connector storage location being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing; and

a component mounting location within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, at least a portion of the component mounting location being positioned lower in the cabinet housing than a lowermost one of the fiber optic adapter modules, the component mounting location including a component mounting structure defining designated locations for mounting components which each include a plurality of fiber optic pigtail cords, the component mounting structure having a cord output side from which the fiber optic cords extend when the components are mounted at the designated locations, the cord output side facing at least partially toward the second side wall of the cabinet housing.

The telecommunications cabinet of claim 11 , wherein the module retaining structure includes first and second module retaining portions for retaining the connector storage module at the connector storage location, the first module retaining portion being positioned forwardly in the cabinet housing with respect to the second module retaining portion.

13. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 11 , wherein when a fiber optic connector is stored within the connector storage module at the connector storage location, the fiber optic connector is unable to be co-axially connected to another fiber optic connector.

14. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 11 , wherein the connector storage module includes a plurality of connector storage ports at the connector receiving side of the connector storage module, wherein the connector storage module includes latches within the connector storage ports for retaining fiber optic connectors within the connector storage ports, and wherein the connector storage location is configured such that when fiber optic connectors are stored within the connector storage module at the connector storage location, the fiber optic connectors are unable to be co-axially connected to other fiber optic connectors.

The telecommunications cabinet of claim 11 , wherein the connector storage location is configured such that when a fiber optic connector is stored within the connector storage module at the connector storage location, the fiber optic connector is oriented with a central axis of the fiber optic connector in a non-vertical orientation.

16. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 15 , wherein the non-vertical orientation is horizontal.

17. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the cable management structures is positioned higher than the uppermost adapter module.

18. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 11 , wherein the components are cable break-outs.

19. A telecommunications cabinet comprising:

a cabinet housing including a top, a bottom, a front and a back, the cabinet housing also including first and second opposite side walls that each extend between the front and the back of the cabinet housing and that each also extend between the top and bottom of the cabinet housing, the cabinet housing further including a front door at the front of the cabinet housing that can be opened to provide front access to an interior of the cabinet housing;

a fiber optic cord routing and management region within the interior of the cabinet housing that extends vertically along a majority of a height between the top and the bottom of the cabinet housing, the fiber optic cord routing and management region being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing, the fiber optic cord routing and management region including a first vertical column of cable management structures and a second vertical column of cable management structures, the first vertical column of cable management structures being positioned between the first side wall and the second vertical column of cable management structures, and the cable management structures of the first and second vertical columns of cable management structures including curved surfaces;

an optical connection region within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, the optical connection region including a plurality of fiber optic adapter modules arranged in a group, each of the fiber optic adapter modules including a module housing having a front side at which a horizontal row of fiber optic adapters is mounted, the fiber optic adapters having front ports configured for receiving fiber optic connectors, the front ports being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing;

a connector storage location within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, the connector storage location having at least a portion that is positioned higher than an uppermost one of the fiber optic adapter modules, the connector storage location being accessible from the front of the cabinet housing;

a connector storage module mounted at the connector storage location with a connector receiving side of the connector storage module facing at least partially toward the second side of the cabinet housing, the connector storage module including a plurality of connector storage ports accessible at the connector receiving side of the connector storage module, wherein when fiber optic connectors are stored within the connector storage module at the connector storage location, the fiber optic connectors are unable to be co-axially connected to other fiber optic connectors;

a component mounting location within the interior of the cabinet housing between the fiber optic cord routing and management region and the first side wall of the cabinet housing, at least a portion of the component mounting location being positioned lower in the cabinet housing than a lowermost one of the fiber optic adapter modules; and

an optical component mounted at the component mounting location, the optical component including a plurality of fiber optic pigtail cords that extend from a cord output side of the optical component, the cord output side of the optical component facing at least partially toward the second side wall of the cabinet housing.

The telecommunications cabinet of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of fiber optic pigtail cords includes a first fiber optic pigtail cord routed from the component mounting location, through the fiber optic cord routing and management region, and over to the optical connection region where a connectorized end of the first fiber optic pigtail cord is plugged into one of the front ports of one of the fiber optic adapters, and wherein the plurality of fiber optic pigtail cords includes a second fiber optic pigtail cord routed from the component mounting location, through the fiber optic cord routing and management region, and over to the connector storage region where a connectorized end of the second fiber optic pigtail cord is plugged into one of the connector storage ports of the connector storage module.

The telecommunications cabinet of claim 19 , wherein the connector storage location is configured such that when a fiber optic connector is stored within the connector storage module at the connector storage location, the fiber optic connector is oriented with a central axis of the fiber optic connector in a non-vertical orientation.

22. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 21 , wherein the non-vertical orientation is horizontal.

23. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 19 , wherein the connector storage module includes latches within the connector storage ports for retaining fiber optic connectors within the connector storage ports.

24. The telecommunications cabinet of claim 19 , wherein the connector storage ports are configured to receive fiber optic connectors having dust caps mounted over ferrules of the fiber optic connectors.
