Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for removing iodide from an aqueous solution including submerging an iodophilic electrode in an aqueous solution containing iodide, applying a current to the electrode, and electrochemically oxidizing the iodide to iodine within the electrode. The electrode may include an iodophilic material and an electrically conductive material. It may also include a binder. The iodophilic material may be a starch, chitosan, carboxycellulose, cationic polymer, or an anion exchange membrane material, for example. After oxidizing the iodide to iodine within the electrode, the electrode may be submerged in a second solution and a current may be applied to reduce the iodine and release it from the electrode in the form of iodide into the second solution.

Claims (40)

1. A method of removing iodide from an aqueous solution comprising:

submerging an iodophilic electrode in an aqueous solution containing iodide, wherein the iodophilic electrode is bound to a current collector;

applying a current to the electrode; and

electrochemically oxidizing the iodide to iodine and/or polyiodide within the electrode as a result of the applied current.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising adjusting the pH of the aqueous solution to between about 3 and about 8.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein applying the current creates a voltage at the electrode of 0.3 V or greater vs. a Ag/AgCl reference electrode.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the iodophilic electrode comprises:

an iodophilic material; and

an electrically conductive material.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the iodophilic material comprises cellulose, starch, one or more cationic polymers, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polypyrrole, polyaniline, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), a metallocene, a metallocene-containing polymer, or a cationic metal complex.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the iodophilic electrode further comprises a binder material.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the iodophilic material comprises a starch, chitosan, or carboxycellulose.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the iodophilic material comprises a cationic polymer.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein the iodophilic material comprises an anion exchange membrane.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein the electrically conductive material comprises graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, one or more conductive polymers, or one or more doped semiconductors or metals.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein the binder material comprises polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF), polyfluoroethylene (PTFE), styrenebutadiene rubber and/or polyamide.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the aqueous solution comprises water which was previously treated by UV photolysis using iodide as a photosensitizer for the destruction of PFAS.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

removing the electrode from the aqueous solution; then

submerging the electrode in a second solution; and then

applying a current to the electrode to reduce the iodine and/or polyiodide and release it from the electrode in the form of iodide into the second solution.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising storing the iodine and/or polyiodide within the electrode.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, after storing the iodine and/or polyiodide within the electrode, removing the electrode from the aqueous solution and then removing the stored iodine and/or polyiodide from the electrode by placing the electrode in a different aqueous solution and applying a current in a reverse direction.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the iodine and/or polyiodide comprising triiodide.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the iodophilic electrode comprises a first iodophilic electrode, and wherein the aqueous solution comprises a first aqueous solution comprising at least 10 −3 M ion concentration, the method further comprising:

before the step of applying a current to the first electrode, submerging a second iodophilic electrode in a second aqueous solution comprising at least 10 −3 M ion concentration, wherein the first iodophilic electrode and the second iodophilic electrode are separated by a cation exchange membrane; and

after the step of electrochemically oxidizing the iodide to iodine and/or polyiodide within the first electrode, removing the first iodophilic electrode from the first aqueous solution and removing the second iodophilic electrode from the second aqueous solution, and then submerging the first iodophilic electrode in the second aqueous solution and submerging the second iodophilic electrode in the first aqueous solution, and then applying a current flow to the first electrode in an opposite direction to release iodine and/or polyiodide from the first electrode.

18. A system for recovering iodine from an aqueous solution comprising:

a first electrode comprising an anode, the anode comprising an iodophilic electrode bound to a current collector, the iodophilic electrode comprising:

an iodophilic material;

a conductive material; and

a binder;

a second electrode comprising a cathode; and

an electrolyte configured to provide cation flow from the first electrode to the second electrode.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the iodophilic material comprises cellulose, starch, one or more cationic polymers, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polypyrrole, polyaniline, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), a metallocene, a metallocene-containing polymer, or a cationic metal complex.

20. The system of claim 18 wherein the conductive material comprises graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, one or more conductive polymers and/or one or more doped semiconductors or metals.

21. The system of claim 18 wherein the binder comprises polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF), polyfluoroethylene (PTFE), styrenebutadiene rubber and/or polyamide.

22. The system of claim 18 wherein the electrolyte is configured to provide cation flow from the first electrode to the second electrode upon application of current to the system.

23. The system of claim 22 wherein further comprising a membrane separating the anode and the cathode.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the system comprises an electrolytic cell, and wherein the second electrode comprises an iodophilic electrode bound to a current collector.
