Abstract

An energy storage apparatus can comprise a battery enclosed within a housing and an ultracapacitor directly electrically coupled with the battery via one or more high voltage lines. The ultracapacitor can form a single integrated unit with the battery within the housing. The ultracapacitor can have a voltage capacity at least as large as the battery. The ultracapacitor can provide energy to the battery via the one or more high voltage lines to charge the battery. The ultracapacitor can have a greater power density and a smaller energy density than the battery. The ultracapacitor can removably electrically couple with a 110V or 220V outlet to receive energy originating from a utility grid. The battery can receive energy from the ultracapacitor when a voltage of the battery is below a threshold and can resist receiving energy from the ultracapacitor when the voltage of the battery is above a threshold.

Claims (34)

1 . An energy storage apparatus comprising:

a battery enclosed within a housing; and

an ultracapacitor directly electrically coupled with the battery via one or more high voltage lines, the ultracapacitor forming a single integrated unit with the battery within the housing, the ultracapacitor having a voltage capacity at least as large as the battery, the ultracapacitor configured to provide energy to the battery via the one or more high voltage lines to charge the battery, the ultracapacitor having a greater power density and a smaller energy density than the battery, wherein the ultracapacitor is configured to removably electrically couple with a 110V or 220V outlet to receive energy originating from a utility grid,

wherein the battery is configured to:

receive energy from the ultracapacitor to charge when a voltage of the battery is less than 360 volts;

resist receiving energy from the ultracapacitor when the voltage of the battery is greater than 370 volts; and

provide energy stored at the battery to an electrical load.

2 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 wherein the ultracapacitor is configured to store 400 volts.

3 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 wherein the battery is configured to store at least 370 volts.

4 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a diode electrically coupled to the battery and the ultracapacitor and configured to inhibit a flow of energy from the battery to the ultracapacitor.

5 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a diode electrically coupled to the ultracapacitor and configured to inhibit a flow of energy from the ultracapacitor to the 110V or 220V outlet.

6 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 wherein the housing is positioned within a vehicle.

7 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 wherein the electrical load is a traction motor of a vehicle.

8 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a converter electrically coupled with the battery and configured to convert the energy provided from the battery to the electrical load from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).

9 . The energy storage apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a converter electrically coupled with the ultracapacitor and configured to convert the energy originating from the utility grid from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).

10 . An energy storage system comprising:

a battery module comprising one or more batteries enclosed within a housing; and

a capacitor module comprising one or more capacitors electrically coupled with the battery module via one or more high voltage lines, the capacitor module forming a single integrated unit with the battery module within the housing, the capacitor module having a voltage capacity at least as large as the battery module, the capacitor module configured to provide energy to the battery module to charge the battery module via the one or more high voltage lines, the capacitor module having a greater power density and a smaller energy density than the battery module, wherein the capacitor module is configured to removably electrically couple with a 110V or 220V outlet to receive energy originating from a utility grid,

wherein the battery module is configured to:

receive energy from the capacitor module to charge when a voltage of the battery module is less than 360 volts;

resist receiving energy from the capacitor module when the voltage of the battery module is greater than 370 volts; and

provide energy stored at the battery module to an electrical load.

11 . The energy storage system of claim 10 wherein the battery module comprises a battery field having a plurality of batteries.

12 . The energy storage system of claim 10 wherein the capacitor module comprises:

a first capacitor electrically coupled with the battery module; and

a second capacitor electrically coupled with the battery module independent of the first capacitor, wherein the first capacitor and the second capacitor are configured to alternate providing energy to the battery module.

13 . The energy storage system of claim 10 wherein the capacitor module is configured to store 400 volts.

14 . The energy storage system of claim 10 wherein the battery module is configured to store at least 370 volts.

15 . The energy storage system of claim 10 further comprising a diode electrically coupled to the battery module and the capacitor module and configured to inhibit a flow of energy from the battery module to the capacitor module.

16 . The energy storage system of claim 10 further comprising a diode electrically coupled to the capacitor module and configured to inhibit a flow of energy from the capacitor module to the 110V or 220V outlet.

17 . The energy storage system of claim 10 wherein the housing is positioned within a vehicle.

18 . The energy storage system of claim 10 wherein the electrical load is a traction motor of a vehicle.

19 . The energy storage system of claim 10 further comprising a converter electrically coupled with the battery module and configured to convert the energy provided from the battery module to the electrical load from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).

20 . The energy storage system of claim 10 further comprising a converter electrically coupled with the capacitor module and configured to convert the energy originating from the utility grid from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).
